The Biebs is back and he’s on the run. A few days after his 27th birthday, Justin Bieber has given the world the gift of music, releasing a new track “Hold On” and its accompanying music video from his forthcoming album Justice at midnight on Friday, March 5, and, boy, is it a doozy. The music video features Bieber and a fictional significant other, played by Tigertail actress Christine Ko , as she wrestles with a cancer diagnosis and he faces mounting medical expenses. Bieber spends the the first half of the video hugging an ailing Ko, rifling through hospital bills, before he takes matters in his own hands and sticks up a little old lady at a bank. A high-speed chase emerges with Bieber on a motorcycle pursued by the police as he races to hug his hospital-ridden wife. While the madness ensues, the song’s refrain repeats, “Take my hand and hold on / Tell me everything that you need to say / ’Cause I know how it feels to be someone / Feels to be someone who loses their way.” Sung like a man who knows what he’s talking about . Check out Bieber’s high-speed chase, mea culpa, and most recent emotionally charged music video for “Hold On” below. … [Read more...] about Justin Bieber Needs You to ‘Hold On’ Till He’s Done Robbing This Bank in New Music Video
Justin Bieber and cops who are not there to arrest him at the Comfort Diner in Manhattan. The Justin Bieber rehabilitation campaign continues . While at the Comfort Diner in Midtown Manhattan, the Biebs (or his publicist?) noticed a group of New York’s Finest eating dinner alongside him. He decided to pay their tab, which TMZ reports came out to around $200, and the cops took a photo with him to show to their families. Of course, if something doesn’t exist on social media, it may as well not have happened, so the Biebs posted the photo on Shots and Twitter as evidence of his good deed. Khaled isn’t the last guy carrying the torch for DJ-themed albums, but he is the most vocal and entertaining, the one angling for the biggest fish and, more often than not, hooking his catch. Photo: DJ Khaled/YouTube What makes a hit record soar? Is it vibrant melodies and impactful lyrics syncing up with driving, anthemic production? Is it the world-beating verve of a hungry new artist with a unique history and perspective? Is it the comforting voice of a household name or the familiarity of a beloved, time-tested melody reinterpreted for modern times? Is it all just chemistry, the careful mixing and matching of star power? These questions seem crucial to understanding the career path of DJ Khaled , the Palestinian American South Florida radio personality turned mogul, advertiser, and influencer who, 15 years ago this spring, dived into the business of star-studded rap compilations with 2006’s Listennn … The Album and never looked back. Khaled records carry on the same traditions as old DJ Clue and Kid Capri tapes and the tie-in soundtracks to films like Friday or Romeo Must Die , where an executive producer leverages their relationships with talented performers in order to hip the public to music that might not otherwise see release. Rappers make much more music than what we hear once or twice a year when a proper project drops. The enterprising compilation curator excels at coaxing artists into liberating gems from the vault or composing new music around a theme, and this sometimes results in classics like Romeo Must Die ’s Aaliyah and DMX hit “ Come Back in One Piece .” Now, with a fertile ecology of leaks sourced by hacks and files swiped out of studios, and with the curator class being poached by streaming services to pump out themed playlists, there isn’t as much of a drive to concoct commercial releases to house potent loosies from famous stars. (They can just drop a “pack” or a compilation of their own. Drake’s 2019 Care Package … [Read more...] about DJ Khaled Will Never Change. Why Should He?
Photo: Todd Wawrychuk/A.M.P.A.S. via Getty Images If the 2021 Academy Awards broadcast went off without a hitch during a pandemic year, it would have been the greatest heist director Steven Soderbergh ever pulled. Instead, Soderbergh and the producers swapped the presentation order of the usual grand finale category of Best Picture with Lead Actor. Viewers guessed this was so the show could end on a powerful note, with a posthumous Oscar win for the late Chadwick Boseman’s performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. But the Academy ended up voting for The Father ’s Anthony Hopkins , who was not in attendance, so the show just abruptly petered out. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times , Soderbergh insisted that he had meant to switch up the order of the awards show, “well before the nominations came out — we talked about that in January,” because “actors’ speeches tend to be more dramatic than producers’ speeches. And so we thought it might be fun to mix it up, especially if people didn’t know that was coming. So that was always part of the plan.” Soderbergh admits that “if there was even the sliver of a chance that [Boseman] would win and that his widow would speak, then we were operating under the fact that was the end of the show. So it wasn’t like we assumed it would, but if there was even a possibility that it would happen, then you have to account for that. That would have been such a shattering moment, that to come back after that would have just been impossible.” It’s great that Soderbergh at least acknowledges that the team acknowledged the possibility of Boseman’s win when putting the Lead Actor category last, but “that was always part of the plan”? Sure, Steve. Sources Los Angeles Times … [Read more...] about Steven Soderbergh Says He Totally Meant for the Oscars to End Like That
