Where Does the Abortion Thriller Go From Here?
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos by Mubi, Focus Features and IFC Films and Titillation’s a queasy way to sell a story about abortion, but in the early decades of the film industry, when the procedure came up onscreen at all, it was generally within the realm of exploitation. Like STIs and arrest, it was depicted as a scandalous consequence of lurid misbehavior, one that could double as a karmic punishment. In 1928’s The Road to Ruin , for instance — a silent successful enough to be remade as a talkie a few years later — a teenager succumbs from the complications of a sketchy operation after her forays into drinking, sexual exploration, and strip-poker result in an unwanted pregnancy. To ensure the moral of the story isn’t overlooked, the movie then offers up the biblical quote attesting that “the wages of sin is death.” A similar end awaits the title character of 1962’s The Shame of Patty Smith , a timid 21-year-old played by Dani Lynn who obtains an off-books procedure in a massage parlor. “Illegal abortion!” the posters trumpeted, advertising that no one under the age of 18 would be admitted. “You will be aroused and shocked! And it’s all true …” And yet, despite those taglines, and despite the title, the film isn’t a prurient cautionary tale about a girl gone wild. It’s instead a forerunner of what’s more recently blossomed into its own sad genre: the abortion thriller, whose tension hinges on whether someone will be able to get the procedure they need before time runs out, and if they do, whether that procedure will turn out to be safe. The Shame of Patty Smith has nothing but sympathy for Patty, whose martyrdom is underscored by the fact that she’s the survivor of a sexual assault. Some of the men she careens among offer sympathy, too, even as they tell her they can’t or won’t help. One physician refuses to break the law; another is willing but wants more money than she can afford to take the risk, while a priest is willing to loan her the … [Read more...] about Where Does the Abortion Thriller Go From Here?
Kevin Spacey Charged With 4 Sexual Assault Counts in U.K.
Photo: Pool/Getty Images Kevin Spacey was sitting in court in New York City in an evidence hearing related to his New York sex-abuse case, when a set of separate charges came down from the U.K. The former House of Cards star was charged with four counts of sexual assault against three men, along with a count of causing someone to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. According to CNN , the charges stem from two alleged 2005 incidents in London, two 2008 incidents in London, and one 2013 incident in Gloucestershire. It was pure coincidence for the charges to be announced while Spacey was in court in the U.S. for a hearing related to the sexual-assault lawsuit brought by Anthony Rapp , the actor who made the first of many assault claims against Spacey in 2017. From the U.S. courtroom, Spacey declined several times to comment on the U.K. charges. The U.K. charges are the product of years of investigations, the first of which police announced in November 2017. Others were announced in the weeks and months after ward. Many of the charges in the U.K. are associated with Spacey’s tenure as artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre from 2004–15. Also in November 2017, the Old Vic said it had received 20 allegations of inappropriate behavior against Spacey, with the theater’s artistic director calling the claims a “shock and a disturbing surprise.” Spacey, an Oscar and Tony winner, has begun an attempted return to acting, most recently cast in the Hungarian historical drama 1242 , for sale at Cannes. Victoria Bekiempis contributed reporting. … [Read more...] about Kevin Spacey Charged With 4 Sexual Assault Counts in U.K.

Baumbach’s Children Are Making a Lot of Noise at Cannes
Finn Wolfhard in Jesse Eisenberg’s When You Finish Saving the World and Daniel Zolghadri in Owen Kline’s Funny Pages . Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos by A24 Sports has a concept called the coaching tree. A successful coach’s assistants become coaches themselves, and if they work out, their assistants become coaches, and so on. You can do the same thing with directors. The Steven Spielberg coaching tree produced filmmakers Robert Zemeckis and Chris Columbus, while Sam Raimi gave us the Coen brothers, who in turn gave us Barry Sonnenfeld. But did you know that there is also a Noah Baumbach coaching tree? The prickly Baumbach isn’t a guy you’d immediately think of as having acolytes, but just look at this year’s Cannes lineup: Seventeen years after Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale , both of the children from that film have brought their directorial debuts to the Croisette, and each bears the unmistakable imprint of their cinematic forefather. If Bill Walsh’s disciples carried the legacy of the short-passing offense into the 21st century, then Baumbach’s will ensure millennials and Zoomers shall never be deprived of their own dyspeptic dramedies about artists and intellectuals. (Do not speak of the boomers’ master of this form, whose films used to premiere at Cannes all the time too.) Jesse Eisenberg played the Baumbach stand-in in Squid and the Whale , and it’s in his film that the older director’s DNA comes through strongest. When You Finish Saving the World debuted at this year’s virtual Sundance, and at Cannes it was the opening-night selection for the Critics Week sidebar. Based on Eisenberg’s audiobook of the same name, the film tracks the generation gap between a middle-aged mom, Evelyn (Julianne Moore), and her teenage son, Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard). She’s the brittle head of a domestic-violence shelter, he’s a naïf who sings little songs into a webcam and obsesses over his follower count. Both of them are painfully aware he lacks depth, … [Read more...] about Baumbach’s Children Are Making a Lot of Noise at Cannes
