Gentefied, which premieres today on Netflix, is a bilingual love letter to Boyle Heights, a Latinx neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles and an epicenter of Mexican-American culture. The show’s characters, like many of the people who actually live there, are hardworking immigrants and the descendants of immigrants caught between two worlds: the native culture they don’t want to let go and the new one filled with promise.
