Justin Bieber and cops who are not there to arrest him at the Comfort Diner in Manhattan. The Justin Bieber rehabilitation campaign continues . While at the Comfort Diner in Midtown Manhattan, the Biebs (or his publicist?) noticed a group of New York’s Finest eating dinner alongside him. He decided to pay their tab, which TMZ reports came out to around $200, and the cops took a photo with him to show to their families. Of course, if something doesn’t exist on social media, it may as well not have happened, so the Biebs posted the photo on Shots and Twitter as evidence of his good deed. He’s a good guy now, so don’t try to mess with him or anything, man. Sources TMZ … [Read more...] about Justin Bieber Tries to Prove He’s a Good Person by Buying Dinner for Some Cops
Could it be wo-orse? Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage A-Rod has decided to approach the end of his relationship with J.Lo as if he is a character in a mid-2000s TV drama. Which is to say, he’s taken this moment to blare some Coldplay. Before J-Rod went really, truly, officially, no-take-backsies public with their breakup this morning, A-Rod had already posted an Instagram Story Wednesday night of him lovingly panning over photos from the couple’s relationship, tagging J.Lo in a blue heart at the bottom of the video and ending the clip by settling in on a photo of a heart they’d carved in the sand on the beach with “Jennifer + Alex” written inside — all while “Fix You” plays in the background. Now, does this most resemble an episode of Scrubs ? The O.C. ? The film You, Me & Dupree ? That infamous sequence in The Newsroom ? Doesn’t this make this seem like J.Lo has died, instead of simply ending their engagement? It certainly does at least make it look like he’s the one who didn’t want it to end, though really, who can say with this couple’s whole soap-operatic thing . Once we have started to begin processing the music that accompanies A-Rod’s post, we can try to ponder the content of the video itself. Is this J.Lo’s mantlepiece or his? Are they going to have to divide the memorabilia on display? And finally, in something entirely unrelated to the breakup, what’s going on with the framed paired of photos of J.Lo and her Hustlers co-star Constance Wu across from Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand circa their “Happy Days”/”Get Happy” duet? Is this some sort of inside joke from the set? Which of them considers themselves the Judy or Babs of the relationship? Once we get to the bottom of the J-Rod breakup, there are just so many more questions to ask. … [Read more...] about A-Rod, Having Tried His Best But Not Succeeded, Posts a Very Coldplay Tribute to J.Lo
Photo: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images Last night’s third season premiere of FX’s Pose was held in person at Manhattan’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, but while things might slowly be returning to normal when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, Janet Mock is dead-set against normalcy when it comes to the industry’s treatment of her fellow trans women and BIPOC. In an impassioned 15-minute speech, the Pose executive producer and director issued a wide-ranging, emotional address to the cast members, executives, and journalists gathered ahead of the night’s screening, expressing her frustration with her paycheck, the denigration of trans women in the industry, and, seemingly, her own infidelity in her relationship with Pose actor Angel Bismark Curiel, who plays Lil Papi on the series. “Fuck Hollywood,” Mock said, pacing once she took the microphone, according to the Daily Beast . “This makes you uncomfortable? It should. It should make you fucking shake in your motherfucking boots. This is speaking the truth. This is what Pose is.” Mock expressed her exasperation with her pay on the series. “Why am I making $40,000 a motherfucking episode, huh? Do you know who the fuck I am? Do you know what I fucking mean?,” said the EP. “I am angry. This is truth. This is the motherfucking truth.” Mock told the crowd that Pose ’s first two episodes suffered from the lack of trans women in the room; Mock and fellow producer/writer Our Lady J joined the writing staff later on. She called on series creator Ryan Murphy in the audience, asking him, “Who brought the girls in? “I did,” replied Murphy, “I wanted to bring in the girls.” Mock also apologized to Our Lady J. “I tried to shrink you to make myself bigger,” she said. “Why could I just love you?” Despite her frustrations, Mock also praised Pose ’s cast members, including Hailie Sahar, Dominique Jackson, Angelica Ross, and Mj Rodriguez, and the show’s impact on the Hollywood landscape. “This is what Pose … [Read more...] about Janet Mock Turns
Goodies, goodies, goodies. Each month, Abraham Riesman offers recommendations of comics media, including book-length graphic novels, comics-format nonfiction, ongoing series, and comics-related items in other forms. With any luck, at least one of them will be a match for you. Gumballs by Erin Nations (Top Shelf) Gumballs , an anthology of his short, unmistakable meditations on shame, aspiration, and self-conception. Told in autobiographical vignettes about the everyday struggle of gender dysphoria and clever fictions about weirdos seeking love and acceptance, the writing is poetic in its bluntness and the inks are as dense as the emotions they capture. Bad Girls by Alex de Campi and Victor Santos (Gallery 13) Bad Girls , writer Alex de Campi and artist Victor Santos present the reader with a viciously stylish chronicle of a very fateful evening in the Caribbean. The revolution may be at the doorstep, but the usual suspects — mobsters, dancers, soldiers, clueless American tourists — are still teeming in the Dionysian nightclub scene, all of them looking out for themselves in a world that’s being flipped upside-down and shaken out for the change in its pockets. De Campi and Santos are near-absurdly good at depicting sexiness in word and form, through pulpy dialogue and perfectly chosen songs, and the way the pencil moves across the page. Shit Is Real by Aisha Franz (Drawn + Quarterly) Shit Is Real tacks in the opposite direction, rendering a Black Mirror– esque world with chalky pencils and deliberately childish figure-work. The result is hypnotically surreal. It provides a backdrop for the achingly relatable tale of Selma, a woman who’s just been booted by her boyfriend and is trying to sort out her life while navigating a complicated friendship, recurring nightmares, and an awkward romance born in a pet shop. Sexual frustration and crippling loneliness abound, yet the book is curiously buoyant and … [Read more...] about The 8 Best Comics to Read in July
