But she is — there’s no escaping it — a rich girl and a Croft, and the Crofts have a lot of holdings and a neglected but vast manor on the outskirts of London. Her aunt Kristin Scott Thomas bails Lara out of jail after a long and well-edited bike chase I won’t bother to detail and convinces her to sign the damn papers already. But before Lara does, she’s presented with a photo of her and her dad, plus a skeleton key and a puzzle — she and her dad loved puzzles — which sends her to her father’s empty crypt, which sends her to his secret cluttered HQ for international derring-do, which sends her to Hong Kong, which sends her into perilous seas and to that Japanese island where who-knows-what awaits. … [Read more...] about Is the Sort of Pulpy Action Fun That We Undervalue
So you leave college and move to L.A. at age 19 by yourself. That must have been very difficult and isolating.Mr. Saturday Night. I was the Nervous Kid in a flashback sequence. It didn’t make the movie, but it made the DVD. [Laughs.] That was a really big deal. I actually ran into Billy about three years ago. I wasn’t gonna say anything, but he looked at me and said, “You’re not so nervous anymore!” But even getting a role to play a role like “Guard at the Gate” was a struggle. I worked a lot at night, too. I had a valet parking business. I had six restaurants and three parking garages as clients in the Valley — places like the Moonlight Tango Café, the Great Greek, and Cha Cha Cha. I also sold cowboy boots. Around that time I got a part in The Next Karate Kid with Hilary Swank. I was twenty-fucking-one years old and the main bad-guy part was down to me and a guy named Michael Cavalieri. So I went in first, and nailed it. It was like, Wow, my life’s about to change! I’m the bad guy in Karate Kid! Everyone’s gonna know who I am. This is real work! And then he got the part. … [Read more...] about Walton Goggins on 25 Years of Playing ‘That Guy’
“A-L-I-C-I-A!” The People cry from the rooftops. “V-I-K-A-N-D-E-R!” They continue. Then, because they are out of breath from screaming with joy, they simply whisper, “I kinda forgot she was making a Tomb Raider movie?” But how, I ask, could you forget about the cinematic event of March 2018, in which we finally discover what Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, was up to before she started raiding all those tombs? (According to the film’s synopsis, she works as a bike courier and takes college classes in London — thrilling!) The official Tomb Raider Twitter account has released the official Tomb Raider poster, in which we see Vikander, standing like a colossus athwart a crashing wave (perhaps a coded reference to director Roar Uthaug’s The Wave?), ready for battle. … [Read more...] about Alicia Vikander’s
For a movie called Tomb Raider, based on a franchise beloved for its gigantic interactive puzzles, the new reboot has shockingly little to offer in terms of tomb raiding or puzzles. Heck, with the exception of a brief scene in the beginning where our Lara inspects the Croft family crypt — less of a raid, more of a visit — we don’t even set foot in a tomb until the start of the third act. (The first two acts are mostly Alicia Vikander doing pull-ups.) And once we’re in the titular tomb, the movie’s attention is occupied by two well-worn action-film activities: skulking around in the dark, and fighting to the death. So if you’re the type of Tomb Raider fan who fell in love with the franchise’s signature puzzles (as opposed to the, uh, other stuff), there might not be a lot for you here. … [Read more...] about Are You Smart Enough to Solve the Only Puzzle in
