Nomzamo Mbatha Could Be Your Accountant
Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Nomzamo Mbatha is already a bona fide South African star, but she still “geeked out” when she first saw Coming 2 America actress (and Real Housewife ) Garcelle Beauvais on set: “The first time I saw her, I did a face because I was so in shock. I was like, ‘Wow, you’re stunning. You’re so beautiful. I’m gonna keep quiet now.’” Mbatha stars as new love interest and royal barber Mirembe in Coming 2 America , the long-anticipated sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 film of nearly the same name. It’s her breakout American role, but 30-year-old Mbatha has been busy since her college days, starring in the popular South African series IsiBaya , serving as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency, and becoming Neutrogena’s first South African celebrity face. Recently, Mbatha sat down with Vulture to discuss all things Coming 2 America , finishing her degree late (just like her “future husband,” Drake ), and bonding with co-star Jermaine Fowler at Whole Foods. I saw you graduated from the University of Cape Town with a degree in accounting. How’d you get into acting in the first place? I was at the University of Cape Town, and I was pursuing my Bachelor of Commerce accounting degree and after four years, I just felt so unhappy. I just felt that each day was the same as the other days, and I wasn’t fulfilled. I knew that this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. So around July [2012], MTV was hosting this nationwide competition, and they were looking for their next presenter. A friend of mine was like, “You need to enter this.” I was like, “No, I have no charisma. I do not want to embarrass myself. There are too many good-looking people here. No way!” And he was like, “Trust me.” Before I knew it, I made it to the top ten in my city, then top ten in my country. And then I was like, top three, and we were on TV doing all these different challenges. Every week, I’m like, “Hey, guys! Can … [Read more...] about Nomzamo Mbatha Could Be Your Accountant
Is a Welcome Revisit of a Reality-TV Time Capsule
Norman Korpi, Kevin Powell, Julie Gentry, Heather Gardner, and Andre Comeau (with his back to the camera) catch up on The Real World Homecoming: New York . Photo: Courtesy of MTV/Paramount+ “That ignorance was just bliss.” Heather Gardner, one of the seven strangers who shared a loft in the first season of The Real World , says this in the first episode of The Real World Homecoming: New York. She’s sitting on a sectional sofa in the same exact loft nearly 30 years later, remembering what it was like to be young and unencumbered and have her experiences recorded for the benefit of MTV viewers. “I miss what I felt back then,” she says, waxing nostalgic for a time without cell phones, when her parents were still alive, and when an extra 50 bucks meant you had enough money to party for a weekend. The Real World Homecoming: New York , a reunion of the cast of the first Real World, the show that created the template for contemporary American reality television, is designed to be embraced by viewers who also miss what they felt back then. Its target audience is seemingly Gen-Xers who remember watching — or at least absorbing via cultural osmosis — the 1992 iteration of the MTV series and being young around the same time those Real World New Yorkers were young. With its first episode dropping today on Paramount+, the newly revamped iteration of the CBS All Access platform , The Real World Homecoming is also designed as a gateway into the deep library of Real World episodes that are just a click away. (Twenty seasons, just waiting for you!) Season one, in which seven artists move into a Soho loft to have their experiences documented on MTV, is an extra-special sort of TV time capsule. It captures an era when people regularly walked around looking like Evan Dando, when smoking indoors still happened unapologetically, and when there was one single television in an apartment — imagine it, just a single screen that had to be shared — and it was the … [Read more...] about Is a Welcome Revisit of a Reality-TV Time Capsule
Chris Harrison Apologizes for ‘Imperfect’ Behavior, But Refuses to Quit
Photo: GMA/ABC Will you accept this groveling man trying to get his job back by doing the bare minimum? Less than a month after temporarily stepping aside as Bachelor franchise host due to excusing historical racism , Chris Harrison began his apology tour on Thursday with a Good Morning America interview . Speaking with Michael Strahan, Harrison said that he now believes antebellum-themed parties are “unacceptable” in any context, and he was previously wrong by perpetuating racism to defend them. “I am an imperfect man, I made a mistake and I own that,” he explained. “I believe that mistake doesn’t reflect who I am or what I stand for. I am committed to progress, not just for myself, also for the franchise. And this is a franchise that has been a part of my life for the better part of 20 years and I love it.” Harrison is also “saddened and shocked” by how he behaved to former Bachelorette lead Rachel Lindsay, who was interviewing Harrison for Extra when he made his contentious comments . “I can’t believe I didn’t speak against antebellum parties, what they stand for,” Harrison continued. “I didn’t say it then and I want to say it now: those parties are not okay, past, present, future. And I didn’t speak from my heart. And that is to say that I stand against all forms of racism, and I am deeply sorry to Rachel Lindsay and to the Black community. To anyone who is throwing hate towards Rachel Lindsay, please stop. It’s unacceptable.” With Harrison being replaced by Emmanuel Acho for The Bachelor ’s “After the Final Rose” episode, he confirmed that he has no intention of making his hosting break a permanent one. However, ABC has yet to clarify Harrison’s future. “I plan to be back and I want to be back. And I think this franchise can be an important beacon of change,” he explained. “I know that change is felt, not just by me, but by many others. And we are excited and willing to do the work to show that progress. This interview is not the … [Read more...] about Chris Harrison Apologizes for ‘Imperfect’ Behavior, But Refuses to Quit
