But now she seems ready to embrace marriage With two dates out on the town last week, Prince Harry 's relationship with his girlfriend Cressida Bonas has clearly moved up a gear. So much so that she is said to be giving serious consideration to his desire for marriage and a family. "No one would be surprised at all if they married," added the insider. Harry has been smitten ever since he was introduced to the young beauty by his cousin Princess Eugenie 18 months ago. When the helicopter pilot Prince was posted to Afghanistan last year, he kept in constant touch by phone. During that tour of duty, he spoke about how difficult it would be to find a girl willing to take on his position and lifestyle – which was reportedly one of the problems with his former love Chelsy Davy. This Week in Comedy Podcasts: The Podcaster’s Promise
Paul F. Tompkins and Ayo Edebiri. Photo-Illustration: Vulture, Getty Images and Netflix The comedy-podcast universe is ever expanding, not unlike the universe universe. We’re here to make it a bit smaller, a bit more manageable. There are a lot of great shows, and each one has a lot of great episodes, so we want to highlight the exceptional and the noteworthy. Each week, our crack team of podcast enthusiasts and specialists and especially enthusiastic people will pick their favorites. We hope to have your ears permanently plugged with the best in aural comedy. Hollywood Handbook — The Podcaster’s Promise Sessions: Volume One with Paul F. Tompkins and Ayo Edebiri March is special in the Hollywood Handbook schedule, marketed as the one month a year where hosts Hayes Davenport and Sean Clements put effort into the recordings and producer Kevin Bartelt lands them actually famous guests to whom they can put in effort. Arguably, though, the boys made bigger waves this year when they doubled down on their own Flagrant Ones Patreon and leapt from the Earwolf ship in a group including Off Book — and longtime shared presence Dana Wickens, who has since been outspoken about the exodus. And while Paul F. Tompkins and Ayo Edebiri are both “Try Month” veterans, it makes sense that Chef Kevin might struggle in the early days of this independent period to secure the dream guests like Nathan Fielder, Tim Robinson, or Bob Odenkirk that he admits to reaching out to. Instead, Hayes and Sean are reimagining “Tri [ sic ] Month,” beginning with an early draft of their prestige narrative program The Podcaster’s Promise , set in the year 3010 under President Crooked Media (and Dax Shepard is alive). Mix the goofy premise with Earwolf insiders like PFT and Ayo, who are willing to cryptically dish on the fracturing business of comedy podcasting, and this month is off to another great start. — Noah Jacobs Listen: Spotify | … [Read more...] about This Week in Comedy Podcasts: The Podcaster’s Promise
Will Eisner and the Secret History of the Graphic Novel
Art by Will Eisner. Photo: Abrams Books Graphic novels — that is, long-form narratives done in the style of comic books — have rocked the literary world in recent decades. Works like Maus , Persepolis , and Fun Home have garnered Pulitzers, given birth to film and theater adaptations, topped best-seller lists, and elevated comics art from a disdained medium into an acclaimed one. But who, exactly, invented the graphic novel? Debates over its origins have raged ever since the term graphic novel first came into vogue in the late 1970s. But new research is bringing us closer to an answer. The origin of the graphic novel is a bit of a detective story, and a principal suspect is the man profiled in the upcoming book Will Eisner: Champion of the Graphic Novel , written by longtime comics writer, editor, historian, and former president of DC Comics Paul Levitz. Eisner, who died in 2005 at the age of 87, was nothing short of a titan in the world of comics. He was a writer and artist whose influence has been felt since his earliest successes in the early 1940s. Eisner’s unique career included a pioneering newspaper comic strip (“The Spirit”) , helping win a few wars by showing GIs how to take care of their equipment in official military artwork, heading a company, teaching, and even doing the first comic strip to appear in New York magazine, back when it was the Sunday magazine of the New York Herald. We’re proud to present this exclusive chapter from Levitz’s book, a chapter about Eisner and the origins of the graphic novel. *** It’s common to hear Will Eisner called “the father of the graphic novel” for his near-universally acclaimed 1978 work A Contract With God and Other Tenement Stories . However, it’s a phrase that is loaded with inaccuracy, emotion, and controversy, even among those with deep respect for Eisner and his work. Taking it step by step, first consider the term “graphic novel.” Eisner himself, in the first … [Read more...] about Will Eisner and the Secret History of the Graphic Novel
