Photo: Jeff Daly/Netflix/Jeff Daly/Netflix The third and final season of Bloodline , like the two that preceded it, is steeped in the show’s best qualities: the palpably noirish heat of the Florida Keys and fine acting from an ensemble that is truly as good as it gets on television. But its murders and cover-ups and layers of lies to mask the cover-ups often become extreme and trying to the patience. This is even more true in season three than it was in the first two, a sign that this feels like the right time to say good-bye to the morally corroded Rayburn family. Season three, which begins streaming Friday on Netflix, picks up right where things left off, with perpetual screwup Kevin Rayburn (Norbert Leo Butz) having killed Marco Diaz (Enrique Murciano), the police detective who planned to expose Kevin and his siblings — Meg (Linda Cardellini), Marco’s former fiancée, and John (Kyle Chandler), Marco’s partner on the force — for their roles in the murder of their brother Danny (Ben Mendelsohn). In classic Rayburn tradition, the members of the family — including mother and innkeeper Sally (Sissy Spacek) as well as Rayburn frenemy Roy Gilbert (Beau Bridges) — immediately pick up shovels and attempt to start digging Kevin, and the family name, out of this dark hole. In the process, they also inevitably wind up making a ton of cell phone calls to each other, often leaving voice-mails that could be incriminating if they somehow got leaked. Seriously: I didn’t sit down and clock the amount of time that’s spent watching characters talk on the phone and/or make phone calls versus actually speaking to each other in person. But it feels like the breakdown is at least 50/50. There are sizable gaps in the narrative that Kevin — who, long story, also winds up getting shot as part of the track-covering effort — and Co. concoct to explain what happened to the bludgeoned Marco. News broke on Sunday morning that Ant had checked into rehab for anxiety, depression and an addiction to prescription medication. The star, known for his role in favourite telly double-act Ant & Dec , is expected to remain in the clinic for at least two months. Ant revealed his problems in a newspaper interview, explaining that his troubles began after he battled to recover from a painful knee injury and become addicted to painkiller Tramadol. The second season of Bloodline is officially a disappointment. Despite strong performances throughout, this year’s story never felt as confident as the first — and it ended not far off from where it began. After ten-plus hours, the season ends at its starting point. The only essential change? It’s juggling four cliffhangers now. The season’s action could have been distilled to an hour. Imagine, if you will, the second year of Bloodline opening with a guilty John (Kyle Chandler) leaving his family behind, a panicked Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) attacking Marco (Enrique Murciano), and Meg (Linda Cardellini) confessing her family’s sins to her mother (Sissy Spacek). A lot has happened in every episode, but it doesn’t really take us anywhere. These characters and their world weren’t developed enough to justify the time commitment. Perhaps the inevitable third season will correct that problem, moving the Rayburns forward instead of just watching them tread water in the Florida Keys. As “Part 23” opens, John and his wife, Diana (Jacinda Barrett), are on the beach. Realizing that Eric O’Bannon (Jamie McShane) was there the day John killed his brother Danny (Ben Mendelsohn), John knows the proverbial waters are rising against him. He implies as much to Diana, saying in his all-too-cryptic way, “Things are not good.” She tells him not to come home tonight. After a quick trip to the beach and a conversation with Eric, Marco stops by the citrus farm with the cameras. He’ll get a warrant soon. Cut to John and Meg looking at a still of Eric from those cameras. They don’t know what Eric knows. Did he see the crime? The cover-up?
