A word to the wise: Never try to tell Lil Wayne that his black life might not matter. In an interview with ABC’s Nightline that aired Tuesday night, Wayne was asked a series of invasive questions about his drug use, his “vulgar” lyrics, and if he’s okay with his daughter being called a “bitch” — none of which appeared to bother him, until Nightline’s Linsey Davis asked him for his thoughts on Black Lives Matter. He starts by playing dumb, asking Davis to explain what BLM is before declaring that he doesn’t feel connected to the movement because, duh, his black life already matters. “I am a young black rich motherfucker. If that don’t let you know that America understand black motherfuckers matter these days, I don’t know what it is,” he tells her. “Don’t come at me with that dumb shit, ma’am. My life matter, especially to my bitches,” he then winks at the camera. … [Read more...] about Lil Wayne Says He Doesn’t Feel ‘Connected’ to Black Lives Matter

"just got off the phone with the CEO of pretty little thing. hopefully some progress will be made by morning. just wanted to update you guys," she later shared. In her new movie The High Note, Tracee Ellis Ross plays a high-strung, high-maintenance pop diva who wants to get back in the game. “In the history of music, only five women over 40 have ever had a No. 1 hit,” Ross’s Grace Davis laments, anticipating her label’s underestimation of a woman in the middle of her career. “And only one of them was black.” In reality, there were two black women over 40 with No. 1’s on the Billboard Hot 100 around the time the script for The High Note was written: Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. And Mariah Carey’s record-demolishing No. 1 “All I Want For Christmas Is You” made her the third to accomplish the feat last December (likely after the movie was shot). At “49” glorious years old, the continued popularity of the singer’s 1996 holiday song made her the first artist to have a No. 1 in each of the past four decades, the artist with the highest number of No. 1’s (19, … [Read more...] about Is There Really Only One Black Woman Over 40 With a No. 1 Song?
As protests and violence continue to spread across numerous American cities in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, Billie Eilish wrote an impassioned statement on Instagram to condemn white people who aren’t willing to engage with the Black Lives Matter movement. Or rather, people who don’t want to escape their White Lives Matter mindset. “I’ve been trying to take this week to figure out a way to address this delicately. I have an enormous platform and I try really hard to be respectful and take time to think through what I say and how I say it, but holy fucking shit I’m just gonna start talking,” Eilish wrote in all-caps. “If I hear one more white person say ‘All Lives Matter’ one more fucking time I’m gonna lose my fucking mind. Will you shut the fuck up? No one is saying your life doesn’t matter. No one is saying your life is not hard. No one is saying literally anything at all about you. All you … [Read more...] about Billie Eilish Verbally Spanks All Lives Matter Crowd: ‘Will You Shut the F-ck up?’
That’s not to mention the at-your-fingertips accessibility of Instagram Live. Anyone who follows a drag queen on the platform will already know that going live with one another to paint, gossip, and kiki with fans at all hours has become a regular practice for an at-home entertainer. Heidi, for one, has used the medium to connect with her thousands of self-proclaimed “closet cases,” and hysterically recounts how she unsuccessfully played matchmaker to those jumping on the Live with her just last week. Jackie, naturally a fan of offbeat programs from yesteryear, likens the practice to “an old-fashioned TV show. It’s one camera and me, and whatever I can think of, which is definitely a fun exercise in and of itself.” Jaida, admitting that she has “not been the most amazing person with social media before this,” knows that her fans are in a constant state of boredom and stress and gladly jumps on Instagram Live for hours of chitchat and … [Read more...] about ’s Season 12 Queens Are Feeling the Fantasy in Quarantine
