Great filmmakers come from everywhere. Austin Tolin is proof. With a Vimeo page that’s a delightful mixture of under-viewed alt gems, docu-shorts, and a surprisingly well-shot wedding video from what I’d assume was the front end of Tolin’s career, his work dispels any notion that the craft evaporates in the space between JFK and LAX. As an Austin-based creator, Tolin has championed the work of many local standouts, including the late, great Lashonda Lester (who appears in Detective Calzone). I was brought to Tolin’s page by way of a tweet asking me to have a look at the very silly Jamie’s Car featuring the multi-hyphenate creator’s muse, Byron Brown. Like much of Tolin’s work, Jamie’s Car is rooted in downplayed, straight-faced absurdity. I then discovered Lily’s Birthday, which launches from the same space and then flirts with a parody that skews more surreal. Finally, and unconsciously building toward Tolin’s magnum opus, I clicked on Detective Calzone. Holy shit. Only after reading that SXSW said it “strikes the perfect balance of the sublime and the ridiculous” and that the Austin Chronicle dubbed it “CSI meets Naked Gun” did I look at the upload date and realize how far behind I was. Tolin’s eight-minute gem of a short about a beret-wearing detective (Brown) trying to eek out a place in the world after a nasty divorce was made over three years ago. Numerous screenings and accolades later, this sliver of pure comedy gold solidifies Tolin as an important new comedic voice with a deft sense of narrative pacing and a rare ear for dialogue. How did I miss this? Where the hell was I in 2015? Better late than never, I suppose. My apologies to Detective Calzone. Luke is executive producer at Big Breakfast and a watcher of many web videos. Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Photo: Glen Wilson/Warner Bros. When one thinks of Hollywood biopics, the identical twin comedians Keith and Kenny Lucas do not immediately spring to mind. The former law students rose to fame by shedding their stuffy credentials to craft a stand-up career that culminated in the 2017 Netflix special On Drugs. They built a broader casual stoner aesthetic by earning roles in 22 Jump Street and the The Grinder , and helming the animated show Lucas Bros Moving Co . You’d be forgiven for not knowing that, since at least 2010, they’d been trying to turn a little-understood portion of Black history into the kind of sprawling Hollywood film that makes awards-seasons forecasters stir: a movie about Fred Hampton. Unlike his predecessors and contemporaries — Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Kwame Ture — Hampton, the 21-year-old chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, has been largely confined to Chicago history books. He was a famed orator and a committed Marxist who instituted a free-breakfast program for Black West Side children, helped found a walk-in medical clinic, and formed the city’s Rainbow Coalition — a multicultural pact comprised of groups like the Latinx Young Lords, the white Young Patriots, the socialist Poor People’s Coalition, the American Indian Movement, and the Chinese-American collective the Red Guard. His ability to bring together disparate people under the banner of resistance not only raised the fears of national figures like J. Edgar Hoover, it set the Federal Bureau of Investigation on a covert and paranoid path that ultimately ended in the assassination of the young revolutionary. The Fred Hampton movie the Lucas brothers began writing resisted the traditional trappings of a Hollywood biopic, in part to entice the kinds of studio executives unfamiliar with their subject’s name. Their script recounted the FBI’s rabid pursuit of Hampton (Daniel … [Read more...] about Finding the Judas in
Sixteen Candles Photo: Universal Pictures It’s easy to get swept up in a cute teen romance. They’re fun, there’s the nostalgia factor (we were all teens once!), and they’re full of so much hope — the feeling that this is just the beginning . But here’s the thing: Because we’re all so busy getting swept away and having fun and remembering what hope feels like, we don’t always have the most discerning eye when it comes to who our hero has chosen to fall in love with. Sometimes, when you take a closer look at what’s going on and who we’ve been spending cinematic time with, you realize that this person is no good at all and our hero can do much, much better. Don’t get me wrong, some of your favorite teen rom-com love interests are just fine — wonderful, even! — but we owe it to ourselves and our rom-com heroes to examine this idea further. And so Vulture has taken it upon itself to put a sampling of love interests from teen comedies (spanning from the ’80s to today) to the test and find out which ones are worthy — and which ones should just go home already. _ Love Interest in Question: Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) from Sixteen Candles (1984) The Interested Party: Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) What’s the Situation Here?: Samantha Baker is having the worst 16th birthday. Everyone in her family is too busy with her sister’s wedding the next day to remember it (or her, really), she’s caught the eye of an extremely aggressive geek, and she embarrasses herself in front of her crush, Jake Ryan, multiple times. Little does she know that Jake found a note she dropped in which she admits that he’s the guy she’d most like to have sex with, and now he’s interested. The two cross paths at the school dance, Jake does some recon on the sophomore, and eventually he shows up at the wedding the next day to sweep her off her feet and celebrate her sweet sixteen the way everyone should: With cake! Also, kissing. Jake’s Pros: Well, Sam calls him … [Read more...] about Is This Teen Rom-Com Love Interest Really Worth Dating?
