What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and the mantra still applies even if you’re trying to pull off a massive heist amid a zombie apocalypse. In the first trailer for Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder’s first film as a writer and director since departing Justice League in 2017, a group of mercenaries (played by the likes of Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, and Omari Hardwick) take advantage of these slow-walking, flesh-munching freaks when they infiltrate the gambling mecca. The team’s goal? Sneak into a quarantine zone undetected and leave with riches, which, by the looks of the trailer, is a casino bank vault. Danny Ocean wishes . The film will be released on May 21. … [Read more...] about Zack Synder’s

Women Are Keeping Dancehall Fresh
HoodCelebrityy Photo: Rick Kern/WireImage In the cultural spaces from which dancehall music gets its name, women are usually the center of attention. The Jamaican genre’s digital rhythms are calibrated to inspire female bodies to wine , as the vigorous gyration of the waist is known across the Caribbean, and the lyrics to gyal tunes like Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine” and Mr. Vegas’s “Bruk It Down” echo this connection, calling out ladies-only instructions. The living embodiment of this culture, as seen through the years in music videos from Chaka Demus & Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote” to Rihanna’s “Work,” are the so-called dancehall queens: acrobatic dancers in go-go boots, fishnets, and “batty rider” shorts who run the floor at Kingston street parties and diaspora nightclubs with splits, head-top plants, and other feats of flexibility. Yet dancehall, the music genre, has long minimized female voices, relegating women artists to a peripheral role. This, finally, is changing. In Jamaica, where the current generation of male dancehall acts have struggled to replicate the crossover appeal of aughts icon Sean Paul, or the cult status of the currently jailed but still hugely popular and influential Vybz Kartel , women like Spice, Shenseea and Ishawna are keeping the genre fresh, provocative and relatable. “Females are definitely taking over this male-dominated business,” says Grace Hamilton, better known as Spice, the brash, blue-wigged diva behind bashment party essentials like 2014’s “So Mi Like It” and a new addition to the cast of VH1’s Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta . (She’s recently taken up part-time residence in Georgia, while maintaining her home, and presence, in Jamaica). “Back in the days, you only had one female that was reigning. But it’s not like that now. If you called Jamaica and [asked] who are the top artists right now, I’m sure my name has to come up. And a lot of other females, who are doing extremely well.” Kingston isn’t … [Read more...] about Women Are Keeping Dancehall Fresh
Comedy Central Is Getting the Brands Back Together for Paramount+
Photo: Left: Getty Images, Center: Paramount+, Right: Getty Images Amy Schumer is bringing back her Emmy and Peabody Award–winning Comedy Central sketch series Inside Amy Schumer — but not for cable. Instead, the revival is headed to Paramount+, where it will be one of the centerpieces of a Comedy Central–branded hub on the new streaming platform. New chapters of well-known Comedy Central titles such as Workaholics, Reno 911! and The Daily Show, along with a new Beavis and Butt-Head movie, are also headed to the service, according to MTV Entertainment Group president Chris McCarthy. The exec unveiled plans for the latest iteration of the 30-year-old cable network Wednesday during a ViacomCBS investors conference outlining the company’s overall streaming strategy. In an interview earlier this week, McCarthy told Vulture the Comedy Central hub “will define comedy” on Paramount+. “It will serve as an anchor for the audience, [telling them] that this is the home for all the comedy content within the service, both iconic franchises and brand-new stuff,” he said. This doesn’t mean everything comedy on the new streamer will hail from Comedy Central: Paramount+ will also house half-hours from the libraries of CBS ( I Love Lucy ), Paramount TV ( Frasier, Taxi, The Love Boat ), and even the former ViacomCBS-run network UPN ( Everybody Hates Chris ). But at least initially, original comedy productions on the platform will lean heavily on refreshing franchises that got their start on Comedy Central or sister network MTV. “We wanted to make the biggest projects to reignite the biggest volumes of our iconic library,” McCarthy explained. “We want to remind audiences Paramount+ is now the home for this great comedy.” Among the projects announced or confirmed today: • The original cast of Workaholics are set to return for a movie about “what it’s like to work through the pandemic,” McCarthy said. The film is being made with an eye toward a sequel … [Read more...] about Comedy Central Is Getting the Brands Back Together for Paramount+

All the Old Paramount Movies Are Becoming New Paramount+ Shows
Do kids even know what being preppy is anymore? Photo: Paramount/Kobal/Shutterstock The era of streaming TV means never having to say you’re sorry , especially if you’re a corporate overlord mining the IP you already own for ideas. Per The Hollywood Reporter , ViacomCBS is developing a whole bevy of TV series for the newly rebranded Paramount+ based on classic Paramount movies, because why make something new when you can make something vaguely new based on something old. The movies up for TV-ification include Love Story , the 1970 weepy that Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (of The O.C. and Gossip Girl ) and Lis Rowinski are developing as a series, which sounds like it could become a teen drama, but set in a college in Boston — well, not Boston, Cambridge, specifically. A TV version of 1987’s Fatal Attraction , meanwhile, is being developed as a “deep-dive reimagining” of the original thriller, written by Alexandra Cunningham and Kevin Hynes of Dirty John . Good luck doing that without Glenn Close and her curly hair! On the political-thriller side of things, Paramount+ is also developing a show based on Alan J. Pakula’s 1974 movie The Parallax View , with Mission: Impossible ’s Paula Wagner executive producing, though per THR , “a writer has not yet been determined.” Seems like an important role! Hope they find one. Among the other movie-to-streaming show projects: a present-day version of 1983’s Flashdance about a Black woman trying to make it in the world of ballet, written by Tracy McMillan ( Good Girls Revolt ); and a new version of 1969’s The Italian Job that’s about “the grandchildren of the legendary Charlie Croker,” Michael Caine’s character in the original, who hopefully know how to blow their own bloody doors off , or something. In addition to all that, there are the Paramount properties that were already in the whole “beloved movie to hopefully okay enough TV show” pipeline. There’s a making of The … [Read more...] about All the Old Paramount Movies Are Becoming New Paramount+ Shows
