One person wrote: "I was really enjoying #TheDrowning until this last episode which I didn’t like at all! Hate it when that happens!" Photo: NBC Universal After more than 50 years in the broadcasting business, there are still some surprises to be had for Keith Morrison, the dulcet-toned correspondent of NBC’s long-running newsmagazine, Dateline. For instance, the success of his first podcast, 2019’s The Thing About Pam, which hit No. 1 on Apple Podcasts and will soon be adapted by Blumhouse Television into a limited series starring Renee Zellweger. “I hadn’t given much thought to the podcast world because we were busy enough as it was,” says Morrison, who began his career in radio. “I was somewhat skeptical at the beginning that this would be such a good fit for us, but once you realize that you’re not constrained by all the structure of a television show, you can get more into the details and down the rabbit holes. It was fun.” So fun, in fact, that Morrison has decided to do it again. His new podcast Mommy Doomsday — which follows the bizarre story of Lori Vallow, an Idaho woman whose two children went missing in 2019 and were later discovered dead on her husband’s property in 2020 — debuts February 16 with two episodes. When you sit down to review the vast number of cases Dateline has covered over the years to select one for the podcast treatment, what criteria are you looking for? Keith Morrison: I think the principles of a good story are all the same … It needs a strong character who people are amazed by and want to hear more about. Photo: Paramount Pictures About a week before the GameStop “stonks” ascendancy officially overwhelmed the news cycle, writer-director Matt Ritter had already seized upon an idea: This shit would make for a great movie. The finance lawyer turned filmmaker and TV producer emailed Jaime Rogozinski, creator of the Reddit thread r/WallStreetBets, who was quickly becoming the public face of a heretofore little-known movement of amateur investors hell-bent on challenging hedge-fund managers’ control of a certain segment of the options-trading market. Ritter’s goal: to “develop a life-rights relationship” that would lay the foundation for a fact-based film. Within days, a Who’s Who of screenwriters, producers, and streaming-service executives were flooding Rogozinski’s inbox with competing offers. “He was literally like, ‘Hey, I have Ben Mezrich on the other line and I have this other financier on the other line,’” Ritter recalls. “He said, ‘Look, we’ve got to do what’s best business-wise.’” After Ritter stopped hearing from Rogozinski, the filmmaker impulsively flew from Los Angeles to Mexico City where the alt-stock wizard lives to make a last-ditch in-person plea — only to discover Rogozinski had signed a deal to sell his rights for a “low-six-figure” payment to Brett Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment. “Look, we’re living in the era of IP for Hollywood and it’s all anyone ever talks about,” says Ritter, using the industry call letters for intellectual property. “But it’s not just, ‘Hey, this is a hot story.’ It’s, ‘Does this story have a bigger significance? There’s no easy answer to that question, but we still fight about it regularly over cultural figures such as Orson Scott Card, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, R. Kelly, Alec Baldwin, Roman Polanski, and most recently Duck Dynasty ’s Phil Robertson. One of the more durable focal points for this dilemma is Woody Allen, who became a hot-button issue in 1992 when he married his stepdaughter Soon-Yi Previn and got embroiled in a custody battle with his ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow, who alleged that he’d molested their then-7-year-old adopted stepdaughter, Dylan. Each new Allen film dredges up the debate over whether his career achievement eclipses his scandalous acts.
