The Jamaican genre’s digital rhythms are calibrated to inspire female bodies to wine , as the vigorous gyration of the waist is known across the Caribbean, and the lyrics to gyal tunes like Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine” and Mr. Vegas’s “Bruk It Down” echo this connection, calling out ladies-only instructions. The living embodiment of this culture, as seen through the years in music videos from Chaka Demus & Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote” to Rihanna’s “Work,” are the so-called dancehall queens: acrobatic dancers in go-go boots, fishnets, and “batty rider” shorts who run the floor at Kingston street parties and diaspora nightclubs with splits, head-top plants, and other feats of flexibility. Yet dancehall, the music genre, has long minimized female voices, relegating women artists to a peripheral role. This, finally, is changing. In Jamaica, where the current generation of male dancehall acts have struggled to replicate the crossover appeal of aughts icon Sean Paul, or the cult status of the currently jailed but still hugely popular and influential Vybz Kartel , women like Spice, Shenseea and Ishawna are keeping the genre fresh, provocative and relatable. “Females are definitely taking over this male-dominated business,” says Grace Hamilton, better known as Spice, the brash, blue-wigged diva behind bashment party essentials like 2014’s “So Mi Like It” and a new addition to the cast of VH1’s Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta . Amy Heckerling’s Daughter Responds to Chris Kattan’s Claims of Sexual Coercion

Earlier this week, “ Page Six” reported on allegations made in Kattan’s new book, Baby, Don’t Hurt Me , in which he claims that Lorne Michaels pressured him to sleep with Heckerling to ensure her involvement in A Night at the Roxbury . Kattan alleges that after he initially rejected Heckerling’s advances, Michaels called him the next day, upset that Heckerling was possibly going to back out of the project. He then allegedly told Kattan that Paramount wouldn’t make the movie without Heckerling as director and instructed Kattan to “keep Amy happy.” “Chris, I’m not saying you have to fuck her, but it wouldn’t hurt,” Michaels supposedly said in a phone conversation with Kattan. SNL denied the allegations. “This did not happen,” a rep told “Page Six,” adding that the show was never contacted by the publisher to verify Kattan’s claims. Mollie then posted a statement to Twitter in which she recounted her memory of her mother’s relationship to Kattan. “I saw no evidence of her seeing, or even talking to Chris Kattan during pre-production; rather, she was working vigorously with Steve Koren every day to help improve the script,” she tweeted. “During the actual shoot, she and Chris became close and he would call our house EVERY NIGHT to talk to her for hours about how he felt like he wasn’t getting the best sketches on SNL. Photo: Dominic Miller/Netflix Malcolm and Marie may be the only two people who appear onscreen in Sam Levinson’s Malcolm & Marie , but an unseen third character looms nearly as large. She’s a film critic for the Los Angeles Times — “the white lady from the L.A. Times ,” in the parlance of the script — whose every action inspires teeth-gnashing anguish in John David Washington’s Malcolm. First, she praises his film at its premiere, but only compares him to other Black directors. Then she writes a positive review, but in terms he feels have more to do with signaling her own progressive politics than genuinely grappling with the work. Finally, she suggests that Malcolm’s handling of his female protagonist is marked by the male gaze, a critique that inspires one of the film’s many, many monologues. “You can’t hang everything on identity,” he says. “You can’t say that I brilliantly subverted this trope ’cause I’m Black, but I fell into this one because I’m a fucking man!” And to top it all off, the review is paywalled! As with Marriage Story , it didn’t take long for viewers to make an autobiographical connection. Levinson’s previous film, 2018’s Assassination Nation , had received a scathing pan from Katie Walsh , who is white, female, and a freelancer for the L.A. Times . Assassination Nation is an exploitation thriller about teen girls, and Walsh’s review centered on similar issues of identity. “The filmmakers have the gall to spend nearly two hours assaulting the audience with sexualized violence,” she wrote, “only to turn around and offer up a patronizing lecture on the contradictory social conditioning of women as some kind of grrrl power rallying cry.” Levinson has denied that the unseen critic is a stand-in for Walsh, though that hasn’t stopped many viewers from interpreting Malcolm & Marie as a 90-minute axe-grinding session. Key Podcast Takeaways from Spotify’s Big Event
Photo: Rob DeMartin/Spotify It’s been just over two years since Spotify cannonballed into podcasting, marking its spendy February 2019 acquisitions of Gimlet Media and Anchor as a splashy first step in the company’s expansionary transition from a music streaming platform towards something that’s significantly more than that. It was a scaling up of ambition, one that founder and CEO Daniel Ek conceptually outlined in a blog post titled “Audio-First” published at the time. As has been chronicled at length in this newsletter, that transition went on to include a string of further acquisitions (Parcast, The Ringer, Megaphone), a steady drumbeat of buzzy content partnerships (Joe Rogan, the Obamas, Kim Kardashian, etc.), and a bevvy of product experiments that poke at the edges of the current on-demand audio experience (playlists, vodcasts, talk-music mixes, etc.). The past two years are abundant with Spotify-filled headlines, and they collectively exert the feel of a show of force. But the piecemeal nature of the story also sometimes led to a lack of clarity over how the company intended to structurally reshape the digital audio business as we know it and reinvent itself as a platform that, in Ek’s words, will “begin competing more broadly for time against all forms of entertainment and informational services, and not just music streaming services.” I keep seeing the shiny individual pieces, but I’m curious as to how they think it’s all supposed to fit together. Yesterday’s hour and a half-long livestream presentation didn’t quite give me that full picture I was hoping for, but it does feel like we’re getting closer. Plus, the event also gave me the opportunity to jump on the phone with several executives at the company who I could pelt a few questions at. Comedy Central Is Getting the Brands Back Together for Paramount+

Instead, the revival is headed to Paramount+, where it will be one of the centerpieces of a Comedy Central–branded hub on the new streaming platform. New chapters of well-known Comedy Central titles such as Workaholics, Reno 911! and The Daily Show, along with a new Beavis and Butt-Head movie, are also headed to the service, according to MTV Entertainment Group president Chris McCarthy. The exec unveiled plans for the latest iteration of the 30-year-old cable network Wednesday during a ViacomCBS investors conference outlining the company’s overall streaming strategy. In an interview earlier this week, McCarthy told Vulture the Comedy Central hub “will define comedy” on Paramount+. “It will serve as an anchor for the audience, [telling them] that this is the home for all the comedy content within the service, both iconic franchises and brand-new stuff,” he said. This doesn’t mean everything comedy on the new streamer will hail from Comedy Central: Paramount+ will also house half-hours from the libraries of CBS ( I Love Lucy ), Paramount TV ( Frasier, Taxi, The Love Boat ), and even the former ViacomCBS-run network UPN ( Everybody Hates Chris ).
