Photo: Courtesy of Sundance The Sundance Film Festival is once again upon us. Actors are becoming feature directors (Rupert Everett, Paul Dano, Ethan Hawke, Idris Elba). Comedies are being conflated with dramas. And Ann Dowd and Andrea Riseborough are lacing up their snow boots to walk to a lot of press events. (They will appear in a combined seven movies at the Park City fest.) Some new careers will be jump-started, while other industry veterans will acquire a fresh patina of indie credibility, and every movie will be racing to catch Sorry to Bother You , which has the inside lane on all other competitors in the U.S. Dramatic category. But why is it the front-runner when all we have are a bunch of brief plot synopses and some cast lists? Because, “In a speculative and dystopian not-too-distant future, black telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success — which propels him into a macabre universe.” The movie, which was written and directed by Boots Riley, also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Jermaine Fowler, Armie Hammer, and Omari Hardwick. Our apologies to everyone not involved in the making of Sorry to Bother , and we wish you all the best of luck in January. U.S. Dramatic Competition American Animals (Director and screenwriter: Bart Layton) — The unbelievable but mostly true story of four young men who mistake their lives for a movie and attempt one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history. Cast: Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, Jared Abrahamson, Ann Dowd, Udo Kier. World premiere. Blaze (Director: Ethan Hawke) — A reimagining of the life and times of Blaze Foley, the unsung songwriting legend of the Texas Outlaw Music movement; he gave up paradise for the sake of a song. Cast: Benjamin Dickey, Alia Shawkat, Josh Hamilton, Charlie Sexton. World premiere. Blindspotting (Director: Carlos Lopez Estrada) — A buddy comedy in a world that won’t let it be one. Photo: FRQNCY The live-performance business has long been a powerful economic engine for many, many kinds of artists. This is as true for musicians in the streaming age as it is for comedians and, yes, podcasters . (Let’s set theater aside for this discussion. Different bag altogether.) The pandemic, of course, brought live performances to a halt, pushing the business to a cascade of Zoom calls and, to some extent, underground . I can’t speak for everyone, obviously, but my sense is that success in such efforts has mostly been modest at best, chiefly functioning as marginal stop-gap measures as opposed to true virtual adaptations. As the United States inches towards relative normalcy — though within a global context that remains tenuous — the live-performance business in the country appears to be gingerly preparing for the light at the end of the tunnel. Bands are announcing dates again. Some venues are starting to hold very small, socially distant performances. Music festivals are poking their heads back up. Still, the full bloom of reopening will take some time. For now, there remains some room for a little more tinkering and experimentation. One such experiment worth tracking is a “music, podcast, and comedy streaming experience” organized by Chapo Trap House ’s Chris Wade and Wolf Parade ’s Dan Boeckner in collaboration with FRQNCY , a new platform that’s hoping to inject more life and innovation into the virtual-performance arena. The virtual festival is called FRQNCY1 , named after the platform, and it’s scheduled to take place on June 5. Headlined by Chapo Trap House and the band Every Time I Die , the lineup runs the gamut, including comedy/podcast acts like We Hate Movies, Throwing Fits, Episode 1 , and Tinder Live with Lane Moore , along with the music acts Zola Jesus, Pom Pom Squad, Downtown Boys , and Stay Inside . As Wade tells me, the thrust of FRQNCY1’s design revolves around having all the acts perform in … [Read more...] about Are Podcasts Ready For Live Events Again?

Photo: Patrick McMullan In Wednesday night’s episode of The Americans , “ Urban Transport Planning ,” FBI Agent Stan Beeman finally starts to play a more central role in the final season: He once again connects with his former Soviet counterpart Oleg Burov and thereby, unbeknownst to Stan, becomes tangentially involved in spy activities that also involve Philip and Elizabeth Jennings. It seems fair to assume that, before the drama comes to an end, Stan will inch closer to uncovering the true identities of his undercover Soviet neighbors. Noah Emmerich, the actor who plays Agent Beeman, took some time to talk to Vulture about how it feels to finally reach the conclusion of the series, how frustrating it has been for Stan to remain in the dark about the Jennings, why he was “incredibly surprised” by the way it all ends, and whether Stan is actually good at his job. I want to talk first about the fact that the show is ending. How does that feel? Acting is an odd life in terms of that continuity and consistency and predictability. I’ve never had it. Now I’ve had it for these past six years, and it’s been really nice. I’ve acclimated to seeing the same people every October and having the semblance of a family, so it’s really hard to say good-bye to these people. I mean, I’m definitely ready to move on from playing Stan — I don’t feel conflicted at all about hanging Stan up. But saying good-bye to this crew, this cast, and this family that we assembled over the years — you know, we’ll see each other, friendships will persist, but it won’t be the same. That intimacy, it’s a special environment. I will miss it. You said you’re ready to say good-bye to Stan. Is that because you feel like there isn’t much more to explore? He does seem happy in his relationship with Renee, though. I think the thing with Stan is that he’s not a particularly expressive person, even when he is happy. Showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields have said they knew the … [Read more...] about Noah Emmerich Won’t Miss Playing Stan, But ‘It’s Really Hard to Say Good-bye’ to
