Photo: Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for New York Magazine Alan Kim, the precocious 8-year-old scene-stealer from Minari who was snubbed ( snubbed! ) for an Oscar nomination, is now bringing his adorableness to the small screen. TVLine reports that Kim will be starring in the second season of Awkwafina’s comedy series Nora From Queens , where he’ll portray a young version of her father (BD Wong) in flashbacks. The show, which is set to return on Comedy Central later this year, follows the titular Nora as she tries to get her shit together with the help of her family and friends — a premise that was loosely inspired by Awkwafina’s own life. Also expected to return for the second season is SNL’ s Bowen Yang , who portrays Nora’s far more successful cousin. George Jones, Country-Music Star, Dies at 81
Photo: Rick Diamond/Getty Images Country-music legend George Jones, best known for his 1980 hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” died today in Nashville, Tennessee, where he’d been hospitalized for the last week, the AP reports. He was 81. Jones, nicknamed the Possum, had his first No. 1 hit in 1959, and he went on to record more than 150 albums over the course of his career, notching thirteen additional No. 1 songs, including “The Grand Tour” and “She Thinks I Still Care.” He was married to Tammy Wynette from 1969 to 1973, but the two continued to perform together and released an album of duets in 1995. Jones was perhaps equally famous for his silky baritone voice — Frank Sinatra once called him “the second best singer in America” — as for his drug-and-alcohol-induced offstage behavior, including a televised police chase through Nashville in 1980. Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992, was a Kennedy Center honoree in 2008, and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2012. This Week in True-Crime Podcasts: The Unsolved Case of the Doodler
Photo-Illustration: Vulture The true-crime-podcast universe is ever expanding. We’re here to make it a bit smaller and a bit more manageable. There are a lot of great shows, and each has a lot of great episodes, so we want to highlight the noteworthy and the exceptional. Each week, our crack team of podcast enthusiasts and specialists will pick their favorites. The Doodler , “The Coldest Case in San Francisco” and “Murder, Mistrust, and the SFPD” During the mid-1970s, a serial killer stalked and murdered at least five people in the Bay Area, eluding capture and prosecution to this day. No, this is not another Zodiac Killer podcast — this is the case of the Doodler, so named for the perp’s habit of sketching his intended victims and using the portraits to lure them in. The Doodler’s hunting grounds were the gay bars and clubs of San Francisco (all of his victims were gay men), and given the fraught relationship between the LGBTQ community and the police at the time, it’s not too hard to see how these crimes weren’t given the full attention they deserved. It’s a sad, all-too-familiar backstory that San Francisco Chronicle reporter Kevin Fagan details in episode two. A newspaper veteran, Fagan is committed to uncovering the identity of the Doodler and interviews as many of the victims’ friends and family members he and his colleagues can find and wrenches what little details he can from the police (who, in February 2019, revived interest in the case by offering a $100,000 award for information leading to the killer’s arrest). It wouldn’t be the first time a podcast has helped nab a criminal, and after nearly 50 years, these men deserve justice — and a whole lot more. —Amy Wilkinson Astray , “India Syndrome ” & “Ryan Chambers” In August 2005, 21-year-old Aussie backpacker Ryan Chambers went missing from an ashram and unwittingly became the poster boy for “India syndrome.” This … [Read more...] about This Week in True-Crime Podcasts: The Unsolved Case of the Doodler
