RonKat Spearman (Katdelic) D.O.T.M.S. Dance on the Mother Ship
I rate this funk CD \\”3.5 out of 5\\” (Chocolate) Stars because I know if you listen to this CD (like me, repeatedly) it will grow on you. Mainly, because of the catchy tunes and lyrics on it. And you will \\”Dance on the MotherShip\\” before it is over. Initially, I thought this funk had a \\”3\\” on it instead of the elusive \\”P\\” on it. Speaking as a hardcore funkateer (who buys anything with George Clinton’s name on it), the new (and old) P-Funk puns, grooves and concepts are utilized (and well appreciated) throughtout RonKat’s (KatDelic) CD.
The CD opens with (slow motion funk) \\”OH Hi\\” (… i bring the funk like i was born to do…) and it is on the one with \\”Ika Prick\\” like, Parliament-Funkadelic methodic big band funk groove. Muti-layered with guitar riffs and solos, harmonic vocal chorus lines, rhythmn and rhymnes, super sonic synchopation (and synchronization). Just like other \\”Funk Operas\\” on this CD mentioned below, this song sounds like an edit of things to come. In other words (RonKat) this song is too short, \\”…i want my funk uncut\\”.
\\”Dance on the MotherShip\\” the title cut borrows from the concept of the proverbial \\”loan me your spaceship man…\\” with \\”father can I borrow the mothership for a few hours?\\” (… yeah and be very irresponsible with this…). This funk groove track is simplistic synchopation with \\”Brides\\” type backup vocals and chorous hymns(and contagious). \\”We’re Here\\” (have no fear, it’s clear, get over it) and \\”Mackin with no hands\\” (interplanetary mackin\\”…\\”got to get you\\”) has George Clinton (\\”StarChild this one’s for you\\”), Bootsy and Bernie (horny horns and wah wah guitar too) written all over it (fully loaded funk on the one).
Keep rockin towards \\”The One\\” (been down so long lookin up never crossed my mind) This programmable remote control funk unit complete with fuzz, mutron bass and synthizers (with layers of guitar solos) is perfect for bumpin (funkin too). The rap on this cut reminds me of \\”Too Short\\” (clean version). Heavy guitar influences of Jimi, Eddie, & Mike (Santana too on \\”I’ll wait\\”) are evident but not blatant thievery (as with some \\”Fake-ateers\\”).
Some funk reminisent of Sly Stone song and dance music is \\”My Intelligiant\\”. Prince (80’s) NewWave Funk is evident and indicates versatility in jam funk with intelligent song writing. \\”Keep on Lovin (until you die), \\”Change Generation\\” and \\”Drive Away\\” (take your place, you’re free) are \\”Prince\\” induced inspirational new wave funk sing a longs (dance too).
\\”Peace to You\\” seems an obvious tribute to once omnipotent P-funk stage orchestrator G. Shider (DiaperMan) with ever present vocal harmonies. It’s always good when the P-Funk alumini include OG Funksters (George and funk mob members) on any tracks. As did RonKat on quite a few of songs (DOTMS, Peace to you, etc.).
Finally, because of it’s independent production this CD reminds me of the \\”ParlaMack\\” (Carlos \\”SirNose\\” McMurray) CD and others. Meaning that it is Pure HardCore Underground Funk that will probably never reach the ear holes of the masses (unforunately). Destined to go down as obscure one man funk like Lige Curry \\”LigeDelic \ FunkaDelicIsh\\” and Parlamack… etc.) soloists as the music industry chooses bubble gum pop over musicianship (Extra-Terestrial brothas unite and funkatize the galaxy, before it’s too late).
