I love Linda Dillow’s books, and this one does not disappoint. I used this book on my own and led a women’s Bible study with the book. It is a great non-doctrinal study of the Psalms. Highly recommend!

This book on steadfast faith in the midst of adversity is a relatively small book and only 103 pages, however it is full of deep insights and I found myself putting it down and picking it up over and over in the past few months. Using a deeper study of 4 Psalms to show how to not only survive the difficult times in life, but use them to move closer to God, Dillow helps the reader to build a stronger faith and a different viewpoint to hold them firm in life’s storms. The 4 key Psalms that are explored deeply are: 77: remember what God has done, 46: hide in His presence, 63: cling to him and 84: praise him for all we cannot see, to help us find comfort in our suffering. A short, easy read, the points are illustrated with examples from her own life and the lives of her friends. This lends an authentic and realistic feeling to the book. This is not an author who sits calmly in her safe office and theorizes on how people ought to react to crisis. This is a woman who picks a lonely rocky crevasse to tuck herself into for personal devotional time during times of crisis. I can definitely recommend this book both as a gift for a hurting friend, and for a devotional or bible study. I hope to go back over it again using the group bible study section at the back with a group of friends at some point in the future. If you are looking to deepen your faith… If you are looking to be that calm person when the `water’s rise’… You have to get this book. That is all there is to it. After reading countless books that were supposed to `help’ me find that calm place inside, I finally found a book that makes sense and delivers what I have been looking for. In her book, A Deeper Kind of Calm, author Linda Dillow shows you what steadfast faith in the midst of adversity looks like. By drawing on the Psalms and different `characters’ from both the Bible and her life, she shows what a clam brought about by faith looks like. Linda explains the building blocks to achieving this calm in your life based on a saving faith in Christ. ~Kimberlee DISCLOSURE: I did receive a copy from NavPress to read/review. In this four- week devotional entitled A Deeper Kind of Calm: Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity, the reader is invited alongside the writer on a quest to know the unfathomable peace of God regardless of whatever circumstance we find ourselves in or in spite of our emotions that reel about us and cloud our minds. It is a journey to contentment that serves as a follow-up to her previous book, Calm My Anxious Heart. At the time I received this book to review, I was busy packing and cleaning. My husband was helping me as much as he could while continuing to job search while at the same time training the new employee who was his replacement. Our precious little ones, too young to understand what was going on but knowing that something certainly was up, turned into adorable and breathing forms of cling-wrap. We have since moved from Colorado to northern Missouri, are living in a rental and have prospects but no actual job (or income). I am tempted to excuse my fears and impatience, but this book has encouraged me to face them as sins and to look fearlessly at the face of the One who hold our future and us in His loving hand! Our Lord is sovereign and good, and as I found through reading the stories given in this book taken from the life of the author and her acquaintances, He is near! This book has encouraged me to turn from discouragement to joyful excitement and I hope that it will do that same for you. This book sat at the foot of my bed for a few weeks. I would walk into my room, stare at the package and think to myself, I need to read that. Looking back now I know it wasn’t the right time. A Deeper Kind of Calm stayed in that same spot until God knew I was ready for it.

\\”Pain is pain, and all pain hurts,\\” writes author Linda Dillow. We all experience pain in our lives. Perhaps you’re walking through some pain right now wondering when the end of the hurting will come.

After another doctor’s appointment and still no answers I was out of words to say. I would like in bed crying repeatedly telling God, \\”I don’t understand!\\” I didn’t want to speak to anyone. I didn’t want to see anyone. Then God said, \\”It’s time.\\”

I picked up the book and began to read. In the first chapter Dillow asked a question. \\”What do we do when pain overtakes the path of delight we had planned?\\” My plan was shifted and I was tired. Tired of trying to understand. I was in my own \\”Valley of Weeping.\\”

By chapter two I still didn’t understand, but I was choosing to be still. Trying to be quiet long enough to see what God wanted me to see out of this book. Did He ever show me.

Dillow took me through the Psalms and I was quickly able to take the focus off myself and put it on the Lord. I was able to remember the things He had done for me in the past and to meditate on His promises for the future. I was able to be still for the first time in a long time.

Linda says when choosing to remember what God has done for us, \\”Learning to see from God’s perspective is critical if we are to turn our Valley of Weeping into a Place of Blessing, our sorrow into signifigance, our failures into faith.

I have so many things underlined in this book it’s unbelievable. There was a big chunk of meaty truth in every paragraph of this amazing, life-changing book.

It’s a short read, but I took my time, wanting to absorb all that God was teaching me through the words of A Deeper Kind of Calm. Another added bonus is that there is a Bible Study included with the book. You can answer personal questions in the back of the book that give you more reflection time.

This book is a must read for anyone struggling through pain right now, or that has walked through their own Valley of Weeping in the past.

I would let you borrow my copy, but it’s a book I plan to read over and over again.

\\”A Deeper Kind of Calm\\” is a relatively short, easy read. It lends itself well to a devotional type of study, and is a meditative look at several very well-chosen Psalms. Dillow breaks her book up into sections, one Psalm per section, each of which shows the reader a different aspect of turning to God in times of trial, and finding strength in our pain.

Dillow illustrates her points well, using her own trials, as well as the challenges and tragedies that others have faced. Her examples and descriptions, and how she relates them to the Psalms, seem very heartfelt, and the tone of the book is very personal. One of the things that touched me about this book is how Dillow explains that sometimes when deeply distraught and in need of intimate, alone-time with God, apart from the distractions of life, she will retreat to the mountainous area behind her home. She will slip herself bodily into a just-big-enough crevice in the rocks, where she is basically walled in by the stone of the mountainside.

I found that to be a very personal thing for her to share, as if it were a glimpse into the personal devotional time of a woman who is very close to God. This particularly related to the section of the book that is devoted to Psalm 46, with the theme of \\”hide in His presence.\\” I appreciated that she was willing to share something so personal, something that seemed almost to give the author’s faith a child-like innocence. I definitely recommend this book. I do feel that it is a very personal book, one that would lend itself better to personal devotion and study, rather than to group study. Please note this book was given to me free of charge by NavPress Publishers, in exchange for my honest review. The opinions stated here are my own.

his book arrived in my mailbox at the time I needed to read it. My Grandfather and our friend Blake had just died within a few weeks of each other. I needed some help dealing with all of my emotions and this book helped me so much. From the very first page of Chapter 1 named, My Valley of Weeping, I knew this book was going to serve me well. Dillow guides us through the Psalms to help us deal with the Valleys of Weeping in our lives. Even though I had a lot of \\”why\\” questions during this time in our life (still do) this book helped me to find my way to God instead of turning away from Him. I have always turned to Psalms when I need help in some area of my life. Since the book breaks down into four different chapters from Psalms, as stated above, I now have more specific Psalms to turn to in my times of need. There is also a 4-week bible study included at the end of the book to do on your own or with a group. Final Thoughts: I recommend that if you are facing any trials in your life and you’re wondering how you can find God in the midst of those trials you should read this book. It was a wonderful guide for me during a difficult time. I also recommend another book I have read by Linda Dillow called Calm My Anxious Heart: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Contentment. Highly Recommended.

\\”God has a different answer for pain. His answer is found in the Psalms.\\” A Deeper Kind of Calm goes right to the Word of God to learn the answer to, \\”how do I handle the pain of life?\\” Using the Psalms, Dillow teaches us to remember what God has done, hide in His presence, cling to Him, and praise Him for all we cannot see. She shows us that it is possible to go through trials without falling apart. It is possible to be joyful when suffering. We can grow more intimate with God as we are challenged. Dillow shares stories of women in her life who have gone through trials. In their own words, these women lead the way in being victorious through our suffering. In the last several years I have read many books on the topic of suffering and trials. This may be the first to step over the question of, \\”why,\\” and explore how to get through! There is no lofty philosophy here, just the simply spoken words of the Psalmists and Dillow’s plain explanations and encouragement. This is really one of the best books on suffering and trials that I have read. The book is divided into five chapters to read. At the end of the book is a study guide you can do by yourself or with a group. If you do want to know why God allows suffering, she has a page of resources you can follow up with. This is a great book to own and to give. If you’re suffering or not, it will enrich your life and prepare you for the road ahead. I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

In A Deeper Kind of Calm: Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity, Linda Dillow helps others get through their \\”Valley of Weeping\\” not only with their faith in God intact but with it strengthened. She focuses on four Psalms (77, 46, 63, & 84) as the basis of her book. The lessons taught are about remembering what God has done for us, learning to hide in God’s presence and learning to cling to God in our times of trouble. It includes a guide for a four-week Bible study that could be done alone or with a group. This book also teaches about recognizing that we all must journey through our trials, but if we trust in God he will direct our steps. She points out that while our problems might be big or small compared to hers or those of other people, we all feel pain and we must all learn to deal with it without being taken over by depression or discouragement. We must learn to turn to Jesus. I think most women will find at least one or two of the many examples she gives that they relate to. For me personally after reading about the bear getting into Linda’s home it’s hard to be as upset as I once was when a stray cat or opossum finds a way into mine. As I read about her friend Becky being faced with serious illness and family trouble at the same time but still clinging to Jesus my own troubles seem so much smaller and I am greatly encouraged to pray and strengthen my faith in God. I am still journeying, still learning to turn to God and trust completely when things go wrong. This book has helped me get a few steps further along the path. I would recommend this book to those who want to be able to stand in faith in the midst of life’s trials or for those who are trying to help someone else through a difficult time. Reading a Deeper Kind of Calm, steadfast faith in the midst of adversity gave me just that, a CALM feeling. There is nothing in the world such as the feeling, I AM NOT ALONE! Identifying a problem is one thing but understanding and accepting what happens in my life has always been the challenge. And finding a solution is what matters of course to most of us. I knew nothing of Linda Dillow when I first agreed to review this book but it seemed to reach out and I was not disappointed. Her book has an easy to read format for even the busiest one amongst us and her four week bible study will allow you to reflect on those ups and downs in your own life. It does not however deal with the \\”why is this happening to me?\\” Acceptance is the beginning of the healing afterall. In times of trial we are often reminded to have faith, to count our blessings instead of delving in our shadows. Only a few days ago I spoke of pilgrimage and here too Linda Dillow speaks of pilgrimage as a journey to a sacred place, in this case the presence of God. As in Psalm 84, our Valley of Weeping can become a place of blessings, our Journey can be blessed and God’s presence is indeed real. Something else I learned: \\”As the blessing of His presence becomes mine, I can become a blessed one\\”. I found her writing to be at times witty, at others even sad but always honest. Her insights cannot but create a lift in your life and would be particularly good for small groups to share. We all need a friend! Linda Dillow reminds us that \\”It is good to read a book or go to a retreat and hear the Word of God but transformation really comes when we get in God’s Word for ourselves.\\” So let’s have a little faith and take a deep breath…With Him, anything is possible… I give this book a 4 stars. On April 6th I woke to a beautiful day, had a glorious personal time with the Lord, and read from the current book I was reviewing, A Deeper Kind of Calm by Linda Dillow. 15 minutes later I received a phone call which would drive every blessing that the Lord had given me that day, deep within my being. My mother had had a stroke. As I sat with her during the following weeks in the emergency room, the ICU, the hospital room and the rehab home, precious lessons from A Deeper Kind of Calm kept sifting through my heart: 1. We all have problems that we go through and they seem major at the time we are going through them. 2. We should remember that God is our strength and as we have been helped in the past, He will continue to help us. 3. When we are overwhelmed we can hide ourselves in Him and find comfort and strength to continue. And¡K 4. When it seems that the pressures of this life are too much to bear we need to cling all the tighter to our Father. This book begins by asking three questions: 1. Is it possible to go through the Valley of Weeping without falling apart? 2. Is it possible to have joy in the midst of suffering? 3. Is it possible to grow in intimacy with the Lord as we travel through the valley? God has given many answers in His Word and Linda has gathered them together to teach us how we can be calm even in the midst of our tribulations. Each chapter begins with a Psalm that illustrates how God wants us to handle our problems. Starting from there, Linda dissects the Psalm searching for its full and deeper meaning. She includes the background of the Psalm in which it was written. This little book (103 pages) is chocked full of personal stories which illustrate the points she is making. The back of the book includes a four-week study that can be used on your own or as a group Bible Study. The questions are well-thought out and encourages you to think through what God is teaching you in His Word. I highly recommend thisbook. I rarely give a book my highest rating, but I would give this book a 10 out of 10 on my scale. º Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. \\”A Deeper Kind of Calm\\” is an independent bible study designed to help you see the blessings God has given you, even in times of adversity. The chapters are set up well with a mix of personal stories and discerning passages from Psalms. This was a book I selected because of the events going on in my life. Between coming out of a period of darkness and wanting to have a better understanding of the Psalms, it felt like it would be a good place to start doing independent study. I was not disappointed and felt that I understood how Psalms are structured and what they are intended for as I read through the book. The personal stories both helped me see that things in my own life could be worse and also gave me hope that things will get better as long as I continue to place my faith in Christ. It gave me the courage to seek out Psalms for other situations going on in my life, something I had never done before. I would recommend this book to anyone going through a difficult period in life. \\”I Remember\\” has a wonderful exercise for helping you find the positive moments in your Christian life and will help you find the positive in even the worst situations. I was looking forward to this book with great anticipation. My ladies bible study, previous to my joining, had studied Calm My Anxious Heart by Linda Dillow and could not stop raving about it! A Deeper Kind of Calm is a book about maintaining steadfast faith in the midst of adversity. I very much enjoyed reading the book as well as working through the study questions. It is a wonderful volume for dealing with the hard times in our lives.
The book is divided into a four week bible study that can be done on your own or with your bible study group. It breaks down into four different chapters from Psalms: remember what God has done (Psalm 77), hide in His presence (Psalm 49), cling to him (Psalm 63) and praise him for all we cannot see (Psalm 84). The concluding chapter wraps up the journey we are on to face the adversities in our lives and move forward. This book helps to learn how to positively handle the disappointments of life and discern the comforting truth found in God’s Word.
Ms. Dillow begins by pointing out that although Psalms is generally thought of as God’s hymnal of praise, we also need to remember that it is also a book about pain. She asks three questions:

Is it possible to go through the Valley of Weeping without falling apart?
Is it possible to have joy in the midst of suffering?
Is it possible to grow in intimacy with the Lord as we travel through the valley?

Ms. Dillow helps us find the answers to these questions in this enlightening bible study.
You can find a sample chapter here.

A Deeper Kind of Calm by Linda Dillow is a devotional-type book that delves into Scripture for ways to find comfort in suffering. Based primarily off of Psalms 77, 46, 63, and 84, Dillow explores what each of these chapters has to teach us about how to navigate our own personal \\”valleys of weeping\\”. We all go through trials, Dillow contends- and whether those trials are big or small in comparison to each other, each of us has pain that seems unbearable at times. Many times we despair or turn to wordly comforts to ease this hurt – but it IS possible, Dillow implores, to find peace in these times. Using these chapters of Psalms as a guide, Dillow walks us through four different truths that she says are central to drawing strength from God’s presence. 1)Remembering past instances of God’s goodness and knowing that He is still the same, 2) Hiding in Him as our literal refuge from the storms of life, 3) Clinging to Him as our one and only lifeline, and 4) Journeying diligently to the place in life where we can find ourselves in His presence. Obeying the truths of Scripture in these four ways, Dillow says, will bring us the calm that we so desperately seek in our anxieties. I really enjoyed this book and was very encouraged by it. So often our first instinct in hard times is to run from the Lord and sink into despair – but Dillow doesn’t just throw some platitudes at us – she goes into Scripture, takes it apart and examines exactly what the message means for us. These aren’t just idealisms either – dillow shares stories of faithful women who, despite horrendous trials and suffering, continue to testify of the peace that abiding in God’s presence brings. I think sometimes we talk about God’s faithfulness like something we are forcing ourselves to believe in and hold onto because we know it’s gotta be true, rather than something that we are or have actually experienced, first hand, directly. It was encouraging to hear real, true accounts of the blessings and riches He brings us. I would definitely recommend this book to women who want to learn to trust God on a deeper level. A Deeper Kind of Calm by Linda Dillow

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I found it to be refreshing, calming and comforting.

Linda Dillow takes the reader on a little journey through four Psalms and pulls out wonderful spiritual \\”gems\\” and shares them with the reader. There were quite a few of these hidden \\”gems\\” scattered throughout the book in unexpected places. The four Psalms were perfect for her goal of comforting and encouraging her readers.

Clearly this author has walked the path of disappointment before, and offers clear, strong hope for the weary. Woven throughout were glimpses into her own life to help illustrate her points and reassure the reader that she did understand what you, the reader, were going through.

If you are dealing with any trials of disappointment or discouragement (and who isn’t?) this book will be helpful to you. If you are going through a huge major crisis I wasn’t convinced that this book would be the amount of help that you need. It seemed best suited for mature Christian women handling small to medium-sized difficulties.

One other bright spot, however, was the bible study included in the back. Even though I did not completely utilize that feature it appeared to me that it would make a nice study for a small group and that you would gain much more from the book by doing so.

I have to admit, when reading this book, ‘A Deeper Kind of Calm’, I related and did find a calmness. We all have to work at being still, calm and at peace with the world that we live in today, but if we start with ourselves we may just rub off onto others. Trust Father Almighty with all your fears, concerns and bring calmness in your life. The book reflects on Psalm 77, remember what God has done; 46, hide in His presense; 63, cling to Him; and 84, praise Him for all we cannot see. Learn how to positively handle the disappointments of life and discern the comforting truth found in God’s Word. Be encouraged and learn to deal with the waves of trials, depression, and discouragement that threaten to flood our souls. Author, Linda Dillow writing of this book is very easy and comfortable to read, which also includes a four-week bible study. This book was not a disappointment to read.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress as part of their Blogger Review Program. When I first received the book, A Deeper Kind of Calm, I was amazed at how short it is. It is less than 140 pages and is a quick read (I was able to read it in one day). I did not think this small of a book would have much information, but as I read the stories and scripture references in the book, I found that I was wrong. It is a wonderful book to read about how to deal with disappointments and hardships in life by turning to God for help. The book has several stories about incidents that happened to the author, her family and friends, and people she has met in her travels and how these people were able to overcome their struggles and be thankful for their life. The book teaches how to use these struggles and disappointments as learning tools to help you go on with life and that God will always be there for you to help you. At the end of the book is a four week Bible Study course that gives Scriptures to read and questions to answer about your life. This Bible Study and questions that are asked helps you think about your faith and how you will be able to triumph over your present and future disappointments. I can recommend this book to anyone who is going through various problems in life (and everyone is) and, after reading this, hopefully the reader will be able to look on their life in a calm way and be able to find solutions to their problems with God’s help.

I definitely think of NavPress as a leader in publishing some seriously good books- especially Bible studies. I received A Deeper Kind of Calm by Linda Dillow, the author of Calm My Anxious Heart. This is the first book by Dillow I’ve read, but after reading this book, I’m hoping it won’t be my last. Seriously, I would not be opposed to somehow adopting Dillow into our family. Wisdom and humility flow from her pen and you cannot help but feel encouraged, rebuked, and ready for more of her teaching. This book is focused on what faith looks like in times of trial. Dillow is brutally honest about how the Christian life is not always the happy-go-lucky experience we wish it to be. She shares her struggles, not just in general terms, but in specific details, adding to the transparency and authenticity of her teaching. She takes the reader through a few specific ‘steps’ (although this is not a checklist book) of faith in difficulty: *Remembering what God has done (Psalm 77) *Hiding in his presence (Psalm 46) *Clinging to him (Psalm 63) *Praising him for all we cannot see (Psalm 84) At the end of the book, a four-week Bible study is also included. I would recommend this book to every woman- not just if you feel you are in a time of sorrow and pain at the moment- but to everyone because we have all either been or will go through a valley of weeping at some point in our lives…perhaps several valleys, in fact. Understanding that the Lord can use our time in such a valley to draw us closer to him is a valuable lesson- and one we should learn sooner rather than later. We know that life is often chaotic.

In the midst of apparent chaos, we not only need confidence, but we also need calm…

    A Deeper Kind of Calm.

Coincidentally Providentially, that is the title of a book by Linda Dillow – A Deeper Kind of Calm: Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity.

This fairly short, easy to read book is packed full of depth and encouragement bolstered by the honest transparency of the author.

Dillow has woven a beautiful tapestry of hope and peace with threads of pain, heartache, and fear.

Through her words and examples, she points us to some specific psalms to which we can cling and through which we can grow and find the peace of our Lord that is beyond any explanation or understanding.

As Dillow points us to our Savior, our fortress, she reminds us that, \\”Manmade fortresses always eventually fail. But there is a fortress—a high fortress, a secure fortress—that will never fail! This fortress is not a place, but a Person. His name is the Lord Almighty!\\”

What about our human nature? Our tendency to succumb to the overwhelming load of pressure and worry?

\\”When I feel weak, weary, and worried, I remember the deeds of God. I hide in His refuge. I cling in desperate dependence. I walk in faith. And these secret choices bring Him great glory!\\”

\\”Recently, as I knelt by the sofa in my office in the early morning hours and poured out my anxieties to God, He gently whispered, ‘Linda, please go to bed. I’ll sit up the rest of the night and carry the burden for you. Let Me hold you up in this way.’ What a picture! The Creator of the universe sits up, waiting, watching, and praying for me, His child, while I sleep.

Do you need peace and calm right now?

Only God can give that deep-down rest for your soul that you so long for and need.

He has gifted several every-day people like Linda Dillow with a special way of sharing gut-level honest experiences of struggle and adversity lovingly peppered with His persistent peace and purpose.

Do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy of this little gem of a book. You may just come to know A Deeper Kind of Calm for yourself.

Many times when going through difficult circumstances I long for peace and God’s presence. Many times it’s when I feel closest to God. Other times it seems I can’t even see His hand in my life or feel that He even cares. It’s in those times that you can’t go by what you feel but by what God’s Word states. In this book, A Deeper Kind of Calm, by Linda Dillow, she goes through the following chapters of Psalms; 77 where she remembers, 46 where she hides, 63 where she clings and 84 where she journeys. This book is not super long and is a great resource for anyone looking to find that faith and hope during times of adversity and hardship. Linda Dillow goes through her struggle with migraines to talking about people who have been paralyzed. The way she brings God’s hope and help to life is simply wonderful. I This book also comes with a 4week Bible study if you want to go deeper or even do a group study. I was given this book for free from Navpress for review. My review is my own and I was not required to give a positive review.

A Deeper Kind of Calm, by Linda Dillow, is subtitled Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity. In this short book, the author exposes the main theme of four Psalms with the purpose of teaching us to biblically respond during our \\”valley of weeping.\\” The four Psalms and their themes are: Psalm 77 – The Song of Holy Remebrance (I remember) Psalm 46 – The Song of Holy Confidence (I hide) Psalm 63 – The Song of Holy Longing (I cling) Psalm 84 – The Song of Holy Pilgrimage (I journey) I really appreciated that this book did not follow a man created power of positive thinking model, but was instead fully centered around the Bible. A four week Bible study included helps you to dig even further into different passages that relate to the Psalms. As with any book, I would encourage you to read with discernment. I rarely fully agree with everything an author says. Disclaimer: I received this book free from NavPress in exchange for an honest review.

    A Deeper Kind of Calm

I live a life that sometimes seems to be filled with anxiety, and I wanted help in finding the peace that I know God can offer me… this book didn’t really do it for me.

    Who the book is for:

In my opinion, I would recommend this book to older women, those who are close to the author’s 60+ age.

    What I liked:

The book is sort of a study on the Psalms, which we are also studying in my church, so I found that kind of neat.

    What I didn’t like:

This book is a boring read.

This book didn’t really offer any useful information or advice or help of any kind to me.

The cover of this book is old fashioned and should have scared me off to start with.

    My conclusion:

I feel bad, but I can only give this book 2 out of 5 stars.

A Deeper Kind of Calm is a guide to remembering to remember. It takes a look at the Psalms to show us how Asaph remembered the former things the Lord had done when his heart was hurting to hope. There is much pain displayed in the Psalms and the beauty hidden in it is seeing the writers constantly meditating on the things God had done in the past and how He had done them. Remember. I often wish I could bake a magical cake to fix problems for people, but I can’t. The only thing I can do is remind them of what God has done and is doing unseen at the moment. Trials often provide us with the richest and most powerful growth. We simply must keep our minds stayed on Christ. He longs to speak to us in the desert place. I wished that there was more of this book. It ended too soon. There is a good Bible study at the end of the book as well.

The Psalms are one of my favorite books of the Bible. When I need comfort, peace or am in need of encouragement this is the book of the Bible that I immediately turn to.
In a Deeper Kind of Calm Linda speaks from the heart. Sometimes with humor, sometimes straight up and always with kindness.
This is a short, four chapter book. But filled with \\”gems\\” from the Scriptures. The study guide provided at the back of the book is ideal for a short (four week) study on joy during difficult situations. The focus is on Psalm 77~ I remember, Psalm 46~ I hide, Psalm 63~I cling and Psalm 84~ I journey.
Through the soul.searching.words of Psalms we gain a Deeper Kind of Calm that comes from the Father of Love.
Even if you’re not experiencing anxiety, depression, trials or discouragement this book and study will give you a faith lift and also will help you understand that even biblical heroes even had times of learning to trust more in God.
Even though this a short 103 page book (not including the Bible study pages) the depth of knowledge that one gleans from its pages is phenomenal.
If you are longing for a Deeper Kind of Calm be sure to pick up this great-tastic book and start your study today! You won’t be disappointed!

Calm, peace, comes not from mind over matter, but Christ over all. Delving into the Psalms, Dillow guides the reader through the tough Psalms, the Psalms of weeping and searching, of begging and pleading, of remembering what God has done in the good times…so we know He is still God in the darkness. A Deeper Kind of Calm includes a four-week Bible study, stories from Dillow’s own experience, and those of others with whom she’s walked the path of Christianity.

I currently have several books on my \\”to read\\” list. Most are for book reviews for various publishers and one is for my pleasure and spiritual growth (I’ll review that one too, just because I can!) But I am noticing a theme–Peace in Christ. Dillow’s book, A Deeper Kind of Calm, underscores what I have been reading in other books. When I happen to have several books come across my desk that share a similar message, I do not look on it as mere coincidence, but rather a God-incidence. There is something here that I need to know now–whether it’s because I need it immediately or I will need shortly or I will need it for the long haul–I’d better sit up and pay attention. I have found God often gives me what I need well ahead of the situation…if only I’m paying attention. So here is what I have learned so far from A Deeper Kind of Calm: God is God in the darkness and the light and I can know this by remembering what He has done in the past (my past and the distant past of creation and salvation.)

I appreciate the fact that the author, Linda Dillow, has walked with God for a long time through all kinds of experiences, so this book is not just telling us how to live in adversity, but is also telling us that the advice she is giving is based on her own experiences and the experiences of other women she has known and walked with during her lifetime.

There is a four week Bible study to work through as a person reads the chapters as well as examples of how contemporaries walked through various trials and what the Bible says we are to do during trials.

The sections of the book include a section about remembering how God took care of His people in the past and has promised to continue to care for us, a section on hiding in Him when we struggle, a section on clinging to Him and a final section on our journey.

One quote from Charles Spurgeon that I especially like regarding craving is, \\”Holy desires stir our inner nature more than any other influence. Only God can satisfy the craving of a soul aroused by the Holy Spirit\\”. The book encourages us to make a choice to trust God’s way.

A Deeper Kind of Calm: Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity by Linda Dillow is an inspirational book for women.

Dillow provides stories of personal experiences from others as well as her own life in guiding women to use faith to help them through difficult life events. This book is meant to be more of a bible study but works well for individuals wanting to read about the strength of God’s word as well.

This book is not as well written as her other one, Calm My Anxious Heart, but it is still an encouraging read for women going through various types of difficulties and disappointments in their lives.

This 4 week Bible Study is a follow-up to Calm My Anxious Heart, and is a wonderful guide to help a person deal with the trials and disappointments faced throughout a life time. The 4 Psalms used show how to REMEMBER what God has done in the past, to HIDE in His presence, to CLING to Him, and to PRAISE Him for what we cannot see. Most people can immediately come up with a time in their life that can be described as a \\”Valley Of Weeping\\”, and this book provides instructions as you travel through that valley yourself, or as you encourage a friend who is struggling.

As a person who has gone through several valleys of this type, I can endorse this book as one very beneficial to anyone struggling with heartbreak or depression. The chapters are not very long, and the studies themselves allow each individual to reflect on the what the Psalmist is saying and how it could pertain to her individual situation. It is also set up to be used in either a small group setting or as a study you can do on your own. This makes it perfect for both the woman who needs to share her feelings with a group or for the one who needs to deal with the raw emotions alone first. This is certainly a book that will remain on my bookshelves for future needs.

Linda Dillow is a talented Christian author who often writes about the calm that we can find in the arms of God. I had previously read \\”Calm My Anxious Heart\\” by this author so I was aware of her writing. I must say that this is a brilliant Bible Study about finding joy in our suffering and getting though those down times in our lives. It is based upon 4 Psalms that the author finds comfort in and has found ways to deal with her suffering through these Psalms. She tells us how we too can find comfort in these words. The book can be read as a book, or as a four-week Bible study. The words are very comforting and helpful to me as I have been experiencing a time of difficulty in my life with changing health issues. I found the book to be very helpful to me and plan to keep the 4 Psalms from the book marked in my Bible to refer to in future times.

I took a 4 week Bible Study during December. A Deeper Kind of Calm was our book. It was a very good Study and would get you through the short term stressors like the holidays, to the long term stressors that touch our lives. I have sent the book to my daughter and will give it to others when the oppertunity arrises. It will remain with my referance books for a quick refresher for myself.

Linda has a fun way of looking at hard situations. She makes you laugh, and ultimately reminds you Who is the center of our strenght. You will cry, too. But, it’s a deep cleansing cry. I recommend you read the book with a friend or group of friends to really study it.
