Alexsandra Sukhoy lets us into a secret room we’ll all recognize we’ve spent time in, and gives us both the comfort and the bracing truth that we’re not alone in the tragicomedy of relationship woes. A great mix of humor, wisdom and, ultimately, growth, this is a great book for both women and men, a rare and unique take on "the oldest dilemma". Hoping for lots more from Ms. Sukhoy!
I invariably come away from the last page of Alex’s books not quite knowing what to say. Not because I don’t enjoy them, but because there’s a moment of hesitation that comes along with the territory of reading a "stolen" diary, that odd sensation of having dozens of ill-gotten secrets that you’re not quite sure what to do with. The fact that said secrets are readily available at the click of a button on Amazon does little to diminish that feeling. This isn’t a diary in name only, here you’re getting exactly what the title promises: 30 consecutive days of honesty, that special blend of brutality and fragility that can only come from direct access to someone’s innermost thoughts as they’re picking themselves back up off the ground.
Following along as Alex reassembles the pieces of a shattered puzzle into a new image–a new perspective on life and self–is captivating. There are many "Aha!" moments along her path to breakup recovery, as some pieces come together in unexpected ways, some are deemed unnecessary for the reconstituted design, and still others are set aside and nailed to the wall as a warning sign for the rest: make yourselves useful or get out of the picture.
Relationships are complicated. Doesn’t matter if it’s a relationship with another person, with yourself, or with the city you call home. They’re invariably messy, at least some of the time, and there’s no instruction book. But there are countless other people stuck in the same mess, and a select few willing to unflinchingly document their own mess for the common good, to keep their own wounds fresh for just a little bit longer in hopes of guiding you through the healing process. A select few people who are willing to let you read their diary because they’re absolutely sure that something in there will help. Alexsandra Sukhoy is without a doubt one of those people.
Having recently gone through a break-up, I found this book to be most helpful. Alex captures her post-break up processs in a most honest and heartfelt way. I finished the book in 3 sittings (v. fast for me), and I did laugh and I did cry. Through her insight, with questions like what about this relationship made it so important, I started processing my own. And it has given me great insight as well. I highlighted many sentences and passages. The MBA lessons definitely add interesting view of a relationship and the end of one. One of my favorites lessons: "Friends are your life’s savings accounts: keep putting the energy I. And the blue chip ones will always be there for you, even when the emotional market panics." Through the course of the book, Alex’s growth is apparent and delightful to see. It leaves one feeling hopeful and quite honestly, inspired. Here’s to Independence Day and every broken heart’s freedom. Thanks for a valuable contribution to my personal post-break-up growth, Alex!
Examining the business of love as we pursue our life, liberty and happiness among the daily grind’s demands and expectations, is nothing short of a pain in the ass (let’s just be real here). Most of us sweep the pain and confusion under the rug. Some of us bitch about it to someone, or we project our downfalls onto others. Very few actually take the time to write their issues down, examine wtf happened, where their accountability is and adjust their actions to take on the rough waters like a warrior. This author, without a shadow of a doubt, did just that.
I applaud her, and I hope the loving, working women of today who read this diary get just as much out of her organic emotional frustration, awareness, elevation, and wisdom to inspire them to reach their own victories.
I read this fantastic book in one sitting! It made me laugh and cry through the twists and turns in a relationship when you think this is "it" and "the one" only to find out it wasn’t. I identified with the authors process and enjoyed how Alex articulated her raw emotion and how the journey teaches us more about ourselves and maybe that’s the gift that heartbreak leaves us…
I couldn’t put the book down after it finally arrived. Alex knocked it out of the park. She is shockingly honest and I couldn’t wait to see where she would take us with each day’s entry. The ups and downs and finally the breakthrough. Wow!
We’ve all been through it but Alex puts her heart to paper here and shows us that we have to be enough for ourselves first and always.
