Pretty good ideas for the expectant mother who wants to be fashionable. But some of her suggestions (like always wear heels) and the fashion illustrations are less than practical when you’re bloated, tired, and completely overwhelmed with simply functioning.
Useless book. Really, even if you have no fashion sense, it will not help 🙂 On the other hand, if you have any style, or know not to wear crocs ever, then you don’t need this book mamma! You can do it without!
Maybe no one else could tell, but I felt my body changing at 2 month and this book helped me confirm that it’s NORMAL, and what to wear to make me FEEL more CONFIDENT. I’m pretty fashionable and didn’t think I’d really learn much, but the book gives you sketches and actual designer essentials to look for. It’s also a refresher as to what works with your new changing body.
I personally didn’t read this but I ordered it for my wife as soon as she got pregnant. It was returned almost immediately since it made her feel bad about being pregnant.
I have mixed feelings about the book: I liked the guidelines and the sketches, and would have liked more of these. Better yet, how about photos of actual pregnant women versus all the cartoon ladies with stick arms and legs? I can do without the advice about when to get an epidural (there is no question of if for this author) and the skin care and makeup advice, but some women might like those sections. I will also not take the advice on high heels, as these aren’t healthy for anyone to walk in, let alone pregnant women!
I bought this book when I was 6 months pregnant, I wish I had it in hands since my first month. Great book! Funny and have great tips for you during the whole pregnancy time. I use the her tips everyday and people always comment how beautiful I am pregnant but I believe that your fashion style makes a big difference!
This is a very humorous and quick read that I found enjoyable – as for the fashion advice, I found it definitely geared towards city dwellers. She advises skipping maternity gear and shopping vintage stores for past season’s designer clothes a few sizes to big. Well, I live in Maine, and the \\”vintage stores\\” here (Goodwill) are full of vintage Wal-Mart and LL Bean – not quite what I think she has in mind. That said, I did pick up a few good tips and it was an enjoyable read.
Be careful if you feel sensitive about your weight normally – this book may not be the best choice. Includes comments that certain people cannot wear a style…An example of this is on page 110: \\”Ballet flats are too delicate for woman with chunky legs\\”. If you feel lost for how to adjust your wardrobe for pregnancy and still wear \\”normal\\” stuff, this book could provide advice for ‘yes, you should wear that’, or ‘no, you should not wear that’ (as if from your sister or friend). However, if you usually buy a-line, empire waist, jackets, and big accessories to disguise your ‘problem’ areas before you’re pregnant – this won’t be anything new. I think the author is a little crazy to suggest on page 151, a brazilian wax as part of her grooming checklist for before delivery – but I think she is just using humor to drive home the point that women need to find time for themselves during pregnancy. All in all, I like the book – just make sure you don’t give this as a gift unless you know how the recipient will react to comments like those on page 110.
I have to preface this by saying that I’ve only read the first section (first trimester) of the book so far. But I’m really happy I purchased this… I feel like so far I’ve been bombarded with only serious medical info about pregnancy, not to mention the not-so-fun side-effects and anxiety of the first trimester. I really needed something \\”fun\\” to read about pregnancy, a pick-me-up, and I had concerns about what to wear from here on out because my skinny jeans are already getting tight and I feel self-consious. After reading just the first section and previewing the others I’m already feeling much calmer about getting through the next 9 months feeling beautiful and not like a cow (hopefully). The author offers tons of practical tips for playing down the areas you want to hide and playing up your assets through each trimester. It’s positive and upbeat, and she also offers lots of beauty tips as well. I was glad to realize that I’ll actually be able to make a lot of the clothes I already own work for much of my pregnancy and I don’t have to shop in the maternity section the whole time- she tells you what shapes and cuts to shop for in the \\”regular\\” stores. She also emphasizes that with just a few core maternity pieces purchased in the last trimester, you can save a lot of money and create many different looks. I’m actually a little excited to get dressed now and see how I adapt to the changes, wierd as that may sound. If you are feeling like you have the \\”pregnancy blues\\” definitely consider this book!
I started shopping for maternity clothes a few weeks ago and I was distressed after seeing my options. There is only one maternity store close to my house and I am not happy with the quality. Itchy sweaters… who would buy that? Anyway I found this book and I already feel more stylish after a couple days. The book gives great advise about picking basics and accessorizing to make the outfits unique. It is such good advise and seeing the examples gives me ideas for post pregnancy. And the best thing is that I know it is working because I was told today that I’m a \\”cute pregnant lady\\”. Goal accomplished thanks to this book!
All in all this was a vry good on the advice. Being a 1st time mom and loving fashion i was a little concerned about a maternity closet.
I found that most of my pieces will do fine, so instead of going out and buying all new maternity gear i just got the basics, like the book suggests. This book isn’t written for everyone, if you care about what you wear and how you look this is for you. If not then don’t bother.
With all of the wordy, fact-ridden pregnancy books out there that I have been reading for information (and I’m sure every body else is, as well), this book was a nice refreshing treat.
I enjoyed her pregnancy style ideas (and even found some for after my baby is born) and plan to put them in use. This woman enjoys her \\”bump\\” and pregnancy because she doesn’t allow herself to feel \\”fat\\” or \\”unattractive.\\” She’s carrying a life in her body, and she is proud.
I loved this book as a fun read. Now, if you are wanting actual pregnancy information, do not read this book.
I’m at the stage in my pregnancy where I’m feeling dowdy and uninspired to get dressed in the morning. This book is a great pick-me-up and has motivated me to try harder. Just like when you’re not pregnant, you feel better when you look better. It’s another good reminder to take care of yourself.
This book had a few decent tips, but they could have been summarized in a short blog entry or a brief list of \\”do’s\\” and \\”don’ts.\\” The book was extremely repetitive and too verbose under topic headlines. The author highlighted the same things over and over…wear black, empire waists, accessorize loudly, and invest in a few great staple pieces. There were even two separate nearly identical sections of the book dedicated to skin care. Entering my fourth month, I can’t help but be frightened for some of the things to come with my body and this book sadly provided little assurance for me, as I already consider myself to be pretty fashionably savvy and creative about flattering my figure. Also, many of the suggested post partum treatments or products would become very costly and are overwhelming to me. I regret not finding this book at the library instead to put the $ to something more useful.
I absolutely love this book…Amy Tara Koch has taken a time period that often feels like the most miserable and unfashionable time in a woman’s life and made it fun! I love the section on belts, scarves and jewelry. She helps you take the focus away from a big belly, which can become the focal point for many people. Her tips are practical and don’t cost a lot…she can even show you an outfit from your husband’s shirts. It’s written in a fun and accessible manner…some sections are laugh out loud funny. A must read!
I loved this book. It was humorous and gave some great tips on how to look trendy and cute during pregnancy. The tips about accessorizing and mixing and matching are great. Wearing heels and wedges when pregnant (especially if you have a toddler) isn’t very realistic for the every day lady but are still good tips. I was feeling frumpy and dumpy and this definitely gave me some ideas to spruce up my wardrobe and cute it up!
I am mother of two. I plan to give this book to friends and family that become pregnant. I found the tips in this book to be so basic, anyone can do it, and look great. A women should feel great during her pregnancy. Bump It Up encourages women to not get down on maternity style, but to embrace maternity fashion, have fun with it, get creative, and enjoy your beautiful bump. This book covers it all; from glamorous to the basics. Amy’s tips are doable, won’t cost you much(frugal:-)), and won’t overwhelm. Definitely recommend this book.
I buy this book for colleagues and friends the moment they announce their pregnancy. it is funny and feels like a great ,agazine article. Who doesnt need help looking good with a huge bump?
I really love style and fashion and was wondering how I was going to keep it up during my pregnancy. Amy’s book gave lots of fun tips and pointers, while also encouraging items we already own versus buying a new wardrobe.
Her tips came in very handy towards the end of my pregnancy when I was feeling fat and swollen. It was a great pick me up to dress up and get compliments from my friends at how I was a \\”preganista\\”.
I have purchased this book and given it as a gift for newly pregnant girlfriends so they too can \\”Bump It Up!\\”
I bought this book for a pregnant friend and she raved about it. Its my go-to gift for a baby shower.
This book is a must have for any mom to be!! Its has all the fashion tips needed to keep stylish & sexy during pregnancy.
Its fun to read with all the visuals but at the same time was really helpful. I feel that I’m a fashionista myself but found so many other helpful tips that I actually used. Its easy to dress for comfort rather than style when you’re pregnant but with the book I was able to do BOTH!! Comfort is really important so I was able to incorporate dressing for my changing body but keeping up with the trends & accessorizing!
I recently met the author, Amy Tara Koch, and she was just as stylish & chic as I imagined! She was recently interviewed on Fox News for Bump it Up for a style segment and I was lucky enough to be one of her pregnant models! It was so fun & got to be styled by Tara herself; it was so exciting!
In all respects this is a great book for you or any friends you have that are pregnant! There is no reason to loose your style just because you’re pregnant!!
Enjoy:)
Mary (mom to 22 month old & due with baby #2 last friday!)
A friend gave me this book –and now I give it to every prego friend I have. I had no idea how clueless I was when it came to looking good while pregnant. You can’t go wrong. The tips and tricks are brilliant.
I recently read this book and also bought a few copies for friends. I am not pregnant at this time, but I think Amy Tara Koch is an excellent author, and I really respect her ideas and fashion sense. Her wit, intelligence, and sense of humor make for an entertaining read, plus my friends said they have really gleaned some helpful insight from Bump It Up. I would recommend this book to any girl or woman who is or might be pregnant some day. This book also makes a great gift for a newly pregnant friend.
I am not one to be overly concerned with fashion. However, I did know that I did not want to be frump-o-rrific during my pregnancy so I ordered this book. It was very helpful – mostly in helping me analyze what made a pregnant look cure vs. ten-like. The cool thing is that I have been able to achieve a lot of teh styles and looks showcased in this book with accessories I already have. I thought this book was a good reminder that pregnancy can be a fun time to show off the bump – not just try and hide it.
I love, love, LOVE this book! I am 7 months pregnant, and so many of the books I read are dry, daunting and just plain dreadful! Bump it Up is quite the opposite. It is filled not only with useful information but with fun fashion ideas and wit, as well! I have successfully avoided the \\”pregnancy frump\\” trap that so many others fall into because of the tips and tricks in this book…and for a fraction of the price! This would make a great gift when you first find out a friend/family member is pregnant – they will love it!
I discovered I was pregnant about two months before my book tour (my book, No Place Like Home, just came out last week) and my first thought (after \\”Oh My God, I’m pregnant!\\”) was, \\”Oh no will I be fat and barfing on my book tour?\\” Enter Amy Tara Koch. A mommy-blogger friend (Lee Rose, LA City Mom) gave me a copy of Amy’s book. I devoured the book and spent Memorial Day weekend clearing out my closet — packing away the skinny jeans, ordering a Bella band and stocking up on leggings. Amy’s book is INVALUABLE for the stylish mom-to-be. I’ve been picking up everything I need at thrift shops (the large size second hand Marc Jacobs peasant sundress — ten bucks, a score!) and from friends. Because of Koch’s book, I have only had to buy the basics: one pair of pregnancy jeans, a Bella Band, two pair of leggings and a couple of little t-shirt dresses with empire waists.) I’ve embraced the chunky jewelry and platforms. And I hauled out my biggest bag. Amy’s advice is STELLAR. Get this book, share it with your friends, and have fun getting dressed!
While flipping through this book, I came across a comment that made me put it right back on the shelf: the pregnancy glow is no excuse not to go out without makeup on. Ugh. Has anyone told this woman about feminism? This book is like reading Cosmo for pregnant women: it’s depressing to read and the goals are unattainable. What kind of psycho would write a book that encourages pregnant women to be ashamed of their weight gain? And *heels* at the playground? WTF? I feel sorry for her kid.
I found this book to be fun and educational. This book gives great advice about how to dress your growing body while looking great. The authors fun sence of humor made this a fast read. overall I loved this book and would reccomend to anyone who wants to be stylish while pregnant 🙂
I just read this book at the store and it made me feel awful. I’m so glad for the author that she could continue to wear high heels all through her pregnancy. I’m sure she has a car service at her disposal and a nanny (or has only been through this once). Plus, clearly she doesn’t suffer from anything like SPD or any kind of bloat. How the freaking hell am I supposed to lug my toddler down the stairs and play with her at the playground in kitten heels? She has the ugliest picture of \\”frumpola\\” moms. How mean. Well, bitch, we can’t all be you — thank God. Thanks a crapload. I feel like I just read a slam book from my high school. Now have yourself a good laugh at my expense, slap on the self-tanner (ugh), and go watch yourself on RHONY.
I don’t usually feel compelled to write reviews for the books that I read, but this one deserves every bit of the glowing praise it receives! I read \\”Bump It Up\\” in one sitting, and I found each chapter to be increasingly entertaining and informative. I like that the author mixed advice on style and fashion with more practical information about delivery and postpartum tips. And I especially appreciated that the style basics that Amy provides are applicable to preggo wardrobes and beyond — her basic principles are timeless and universal.
Before investing in matchy, frumpy, dumpy maternity clothes, go buy this book! Your wallet, and everyone around you, will thank you.
This is a must-have for the mom-to-be. There are tons of useful tips, like the must-have basics, plus it gives you advice on how to shop in your own closet (which is great if you’re on a budget, like I was!). Repurposing older stuff was huge for me. (Forgive the pun.) Amy’s writing style is fun and easy to read. I’d recommend this as a shower gift, especially for the first-time Mom. Great book!
