Over the past decade, the frequency of mental health issues have increased significantly in female student-athletes. In a 2016 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, 30 percent of surveyed female student-athletes showed signs of depression. Issues such as anxiety, disordered eating and sleep disturbances are common and often unaddressed. When athletes leave the world of youth sports and enter the realm of collegiate athletics, subtle issues can become dangerous problems. As a lifelong athlete, I have observed teammates attempt to settle the broad range of pathology the brain can punt their way. Self-admittance and being brave enough to ask for help are often limiting factors. An emphasis on the physical body, with little attention to the mental aspect of health, is unfortunately the norm. As a result, an unhealthy mind amplifies the pressures that are of part of elite level sports.
