HBO Founder and CEO of Seed&Spark, Emily Best, shares her experience trying to get her company funded over the course of several years. It did not go the way she expected. She received a term sheet from her dream VC, but the offer was reportedly so terrible it was insulting. Another large investor that said they were interested in leading a $2M round on a $10M valuation went silent, and she never heard back from them again. One of her struggles was meeting with the right investors: Her company’s goals were not to grow at all costs, and so they probably weren’t the right fit for VCs. She changed her outreach strategy and focused on finding angel investors — and called everyone she knew who might possibly know someone she could connect with.
