Makin Waves with Screaming Females

Despite underground success throughout the world, the New Brunswick-based indie-rock trio Screaming Females remain so fiercely independent and DIY that they organize their own shows and even do the sound and work the door at them. I recently got to see two great New Brunswick bands — Spowder and GULPS — at a show that they organized. Such support from an internationally touring and record-selling act is healthy for the local music scene.So is the support given to Stage a Revolution, a new organization that brings together girls and women from diverse communities along the Jersey Shore and encourages them to explore self-expression and build meaningful alliances through music. Screaming Females’ vocalist-guitarist Marissa Paternoster, who also is a revered visual artist, donated the design of the group’s cute and sassy logo.After 10 years of grueling tours so lean and low-budget that the DIY band doesn’t have a roadie, Screaming Females are just as healthy musically as the scene that they support.
