It has been more than five years since the 43-year-old double Olympic gold medallist made a miraculous recovery after being knocked off his bike by a petrol tanker while attempting a marathon run, cycle, row and swim from Los Angeles to New York. The accident left him brain-damaged. The truck’s wing mirror hit him on the back of the head and he woke up ten days later in hospital in Arizona, lucky to be alive. He credits his survival partly to the fact that he was wearing a helmet. But he was irrevocably different: ‘James Mark Two’ is how he refers to himself now. ‘The brain had acted like a bell’s hammer,’ he wrote after the accident, ‘swinging forward and damaging the frontal lobes.
