Hand, foot and mouth disease on the rise among children (22-05-2009) HCM City — Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease are rising in HCM City. The number of infected children admitted to the city’s Paediatrics Hospital No 1 was up to three times higher than during the same period last year, said the head of its Neurology and Infectious Diseases Ward, Truong Huu Khanh. “On Friday, three of the 50 children stricken with the disease were in a serious condition.” Up to half were from the city and the rest from provinces such as Dong Nai, Long An, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh and An Giang. Nguyen Thi Thu Thao, from Cu Chi District, had a child hospitalised with the disease. She said she moved her child to a lobby to avoid stuffy conditions as four to five patients were sharing a room because of the outbreak. Dang Thi Tuoi, from Vinh Long Commune, had a child seriously ill with the disease. At the ward’s emergency room, two children shared a bed.
