Fifteen years ago, publishers would accept a book proposal for self-help and information books on the strength of the writing and content alone. Otherwise, we would have never enjoyed books like The Late Great Planet Earth or Dare to Discipline. While it’s true that Tim LaHaye and James Dobson eventually developed nationwide acclaim, at the time those books were published they were still considered regional talent. Today, even speakers with a vast following in one area of the country are rejected by publishers on the basis of platform alone, regardless of the quality of their message.What is platform? It is a foundational message that has been spread nationwide through conferences and seminars. It includes the branding of the author as an expert in his field, and enough of a following to guarantee the sale of thousands of books right off the press. Publishers are looking for back-of-the-room sales more than sales through bookstores. They want an automatic readership who know the expert’s name and likes what he or she offers.
