VW's first purpose-built EV is initially available with a 58kWh battery pack, though 77kWh and 45kWh options will be added later. Depending on the battery, claimed ranges are between 260-340 miles. We tested the 58kWh version which is capable of a 0-62mph sprint in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 99mph. Photo: Sony Pictures Classics In French Exit, Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges play Frances and Malcolm Price, a mother-son duo who come across as if they’re the only ones in on a private, deeply absurd joke. A pair of true New York eccentrics who’ve run out of cash after a lifetime of fabulous wealth, then moved to Paris to avoid debt collectors and social humiliation, they innately understand and amuse each other endlessly: Frances calmly lights a centerpiece on fire at a restaurant where they’re being ignored by the waiter while Malcolm quietly beams with pride; Frances mischievously needles a hungover Malcolm at the breakfast table; when Malcolm comes upon Frances sharpening a knife in the kitchen in the middle of the night, he wordlessly leaves her to it. Even as they slowly open up and draw a handful of other offbeat weirdos into their French orbit, it’s clear that nobody can quite penetrate their bubble — these are two people living in a delightfully peculiar world that they’ve co-created, one with a very specific and unspoken set of rules. French Exit, Azazel Jacobs’s film adaptation of Patrick deWitt’s archly comic 2018 novel, only works because Pfeiffer and Hedges are similarly co-creating a little world of their own. They’re operating on the same delicate, singular wavelength, their tone hyperstylized and gently zany, but also deadpan and grounded in real pain — a sort of languidness punctuated by biting wit and deep melancholy. Retta has made herself comfortable. She’s created a pillow throne on the long, burgundy settee at the bar of the Four Seasons hotel; a couple of red, plush cushions rearranged as armrests, another two behind her. She came down from her room in a gray sweater and fuzzy purple slippers she got from the set of her latest TV show, Good Girls. “I am in a space of trying to Zen out,” she says, projecting a cool, pay-no-mind calm as though now, at the age of 48, she’s fully internalized the serenity prayer to accept the things she cannot change, the courage to change the things she can, and the wisdom to know the difference. It’s a philosophy she’s carried throughout her career, which she began as a stand-up comic and led her to a starring role on the hour-long NBC dramedy Good Girls. “I’ve always thought that I would have to prove myself with some really small role before I’d get on the level where there’s a stack of scripts that I had to get through and make a decision,” she says. “I’ve never been in that position — still not. There’s no stack. But I’m working, so I’m not that pressed anymore.” That small role, of course, was Donna Meagle, the office manager on Parks and Recreation whose catchphrase, Treat yo’ self, has so fully infiltrated popular culture that it’s on mugs, T-shirts, and anything else Etsy can imagine. Photo: Macall Polay An interesting aspect of Search Party is that Dory’s friends are slightly freaked out by her sudden enthusiasm for, well, anything. Drew, in particular, seems confused that she’s demonstrating so much agency of her own. Looking for Chantal has given Dory a sense of self-worth. She isn’t the only to find a sense of purpose in Chantal’s disappearance. Dory’s bored, rich boss Gail (Christine Taylor) hates her life and secretly suspects her husband is cheating. The latest attempt to alleviate her misery is homemade seltzer — “for the environment,” she says, unconvincingly — as Dory scrolls through Chantal’s emails. Turns out, Chantal had a roommate she despised named Penelope. Both Gail and Dory agree that Penelope is a possible suspect. Gail tastes her homemade seltzer and makes a face. “I can’t make seltzer,” she says, adding with a shrug, “Sorry, environment!” Like most of the people in Dory’s life, Gail’s attempt to be a better person is basically window dressing. Dory gets a call from Drew saying that the skeevy guy who was hitting on Portia at the vigil — he calls him the Nanny Daddy — is on the subway taking upskirt photos of unsuspecting women. Dory instructs him to follow him. “I’m not built for snooping,” Drew moans. “I’m some tall freak in glasses.” But he does it anyway.
