The boys of BTS are accustomed to making history — they won the first ever Best K-Pop VMA, landed the first ever non-English song at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and literally changed South Korean law last year. And now, the group became the first Korean act to feature in an episode of MTV Unplugged , performing five songs from their latest album, BE . The half-hour kicked off with a rendition of “Telepathy,” which Suga shared was inspired by “our current situation of temporarily being apart from each other.” The group then slowed things down with the moody, introspective “Blue & Grey,” which was also inspired by the loneliness and isolation of the past year, as well as the frustration of not being able to tour. “I tried to express my inner sadness and uncertainty, so I translated the feeling of burning out as ‘blue’ and the sadness of not being able to see the ARMY as ‘grey,’” explained V. The group also performed a surprise cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You,” with Jimin adding, “This song gave us comfort, so we wanted to prepare this cover to comfort you as well.” The boys wrapped things up with the fitting “Life Goes On,” and thanked their fans for their support. “We look forward to seeing you again,” Jungkook said. “Until then, we will continue to stay by your side with good music.” … [Read more...] about Watch BTS Make History on

Photo: NBC Universal After more than 50 years in the broadcasting business, there are still some surprises to be had for Keith Morrison, the dulcet-toned correspondent of NBC’s long-running newsmagazine, Dateline. For instance, the success of his first podcast, 2019’s The Thing About Pam, which hit No. 1 on Apple Podcasts and will soon be adapted by Blumhouse Television into a limited series starring Renee Zellweger. “I hadn’t given much thought to the podcast world because we were busy enough as it was,” says Morrison, who began his career in radio. “I was somewhat skeptical at the beginning that this would be such a good fit for us, but once you realize that you’re not constrained by all the structure of a television show, you can get more into the details and down the rabbit holes. It was fun.” So fun, in fact, that Morrison has decided to do it again. His new podcast Mommy Doomsday — which follows the bizarre story of Lori Vallow, an Idaho woman whose two children went missing in 2019 and were later discovered dead on her husband’s property in 2020 — debuts February 16 with two episodes. (Check out the trailer here.) Vulture recently spoke with Morrison about Mommy Doomsday, his initial reluctance about covering true crime, and the one case that he just can’t seem to shake. When you sit down to review the vast number of cases Dateline has covered over the years to select one for the podcast treatment, what criteria are you looking for? Keith Morrison: I think the principles of a good story are all the same … It needs a strong character who people are amazed by and want to hear more about. And also things that happen that you wouldn’t think could possibly happen. If you can allow people to imagine what might be coming next, and that what is coming next is really quite remarkable, then you’ve got a good story to tell. I’m just talking about it in terms of … [Read more...] about ’s Keith Morrison Is Getting Used to Podcast Stardom
Illustration: by Shira Inbar The No. 1 song in the U.S. right now — Disney Channel star Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License,” an archetypal 21st–century sad piano ballad — has achieved an unusual feat: It’s a debut single that reached the top of Billboard ’s Hot 100 chart after its first week out, where it has remained uncontested for four weeks. The last time this occurred with any regularity was in the early aughts, when the first post-show singles by American Idol winners Fantasia Barrino, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks arrived to nationwide attention after weeks of exposure to the prime-time audiences of one of the most-watched shows on television. It takes a big media apparatus to propel a new artist to the forefront of the American streaming charts. What gave Rodrigo the juice? Are people simply that enthralled with her work as Nini from Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series ? Powering “Drivers License,” a morose but also off-puttingly placid song about a breakup, is, in part, juicy gossip . Some fans think the song is a shot at the 17-year-old actress-singer’s co-star Joshua Bassett , who never publicly claimed to have dated Rodrigo but has recently been seen with actress-singer Sabrina Carpenter, whose new song “ Skin ” is rumored to be a reply to Rodrigo. More crucial to its success has been its embrace on TikTok, where pop culture and current events get memed into absurdity. In early January, an enterprising TikTok user posted a video miming the moment in Rodrigo’s original video where she dramatically falls in an open field. As the song’s chorus gives way to a soaring bridge, the person magically appears in eveningwear for kicks in the same way Rodrigo’s video wardrobe changes. In under a month, the clip has garnered a million likes and hundreds of copycats and parodies. Ever since 2016, when the southern rap duo Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” reached No. 1 — aided by the noise created by the Mannequin … [Read more...] about Nothing Is Flattening Music Like TikTok
